SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,558, dated May 9, 1899. Application filed June 13, 1898. Serial No. 683,332. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SORENSON, a citizen of the United States, residingat Round Rock, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harrows; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed for use as a sulky-harrow whenever desired and which is provided with teeth of an improved form, whereby said teeth are adapted to clean themselves in all kinds of ground, a further object being to provide a harrow which may be used for coarse plowing and for other and similar purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan View of the preferred form of my improved harrow; Fig. 2, a seeu tional side view thereof; Fig. 3, a viewsimilar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of construction; Fig. 4, a front view of a detail thereof 5 Fig. 5, a side View of another modification,
and Fig. 6 a sectional detail showing thei method of connecting the harrow-teeth with the frame.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention, reference being made to Figs.1 and 2, I provide a rear axle 5, the main portion of which is angular or square in cross-section, and said axle is provided at each end with a spindle 6, on which is mounted a wheel 7, and said axle is provided at each end with a vertically-adjustable standard 8, and these vertically-adj ustable standards 8 are provided centrally with a vertical row of circular cavities or recesses 9, which open forwardly, as shown at 10, and said standards may be vertically adjusted on the spindle 6 of the axle 5 by means of said open cavities.
The standards 8 form a part of the harrow p the end of which is shown in Fig. 2, forwardly and inwardly curved side bars 12 connected therewith, supplemental forwardly and inwardly curved side bars 13 connected with the forward ends of the side bars 12, as shown at 14, and additional supplemental forwardlydirected and inwardly-curved side bars 15,between the forward ends of which is placed a clevis-block 16. It will thus be seen that the rear cross-bar 11 and the side bars 12, together with the supplemental side bars 13 and 15, form a triangular frame, the forward end of which terminates in a yoke formed by the supplemental side bars 15, and said-triangular frame is provided with a supplemental crossbar 13, the ends of which are secured to inwardly-curved portions of the supplemental side bars 13, adjacent to the forward ends of the side bars 12. lalso provide a plurality of barrow-teeth 17, which are secured to the rear cross-bars 11 of the harrow-frame, and said teeth are provided with points 18, which are preferably diamond-shaped in form or tapered, as shown in Fig. 1.
The harrow-teeth 17 are curved forwardly and downwardly and are each provided with a backwardly-directed curved extension 19,
and these curved extensions 19 of the harrowteeth project backwardly over the rearcrossbar of the frame, and each barrow-tooth is provided witha backwardly-directedarm 20, formed thereon about midway thereof, and these arms 20 of the barrow-teeth are passed through the rear cross-bar of the frame and are held in place by nuts 21. The supplemental cross-bar13 of the frame is also provided with a plurality of the barrow-teeth 17, which are secured to the said cross-bar, and the inwardly-curved portions of the forward supplemental side arms 15, which support the clevis-block 16, are also provided with two of said barrow-teeth 17. All of these harrowteeth are of the same form, and each is provided with a backwardly-direeted arm 20, by which it is secured to the frame, the nuts 21- being employed for this purpose. The rear cross-bar'll of the frame is also provided with a forwardly-directed yoke-shaped attachthe harrow-frame at 26 is a swinging or pivotal connection.
The harrow-teeth 17 are in all cases connected with parts which extend transversely of the frame and are curved downwardly and forwardly in front of the parts with which they are connected and upwardly and backwardly over said parts, as shown at 19, and each tooth is provided centrally thereof with a backwardly-directed arm 20, and these arms 20 of the harrow teeth are passed through the parts of the frame with which the teeth are connected and are held in place by nuts 21.
The clevis-block 16 or the forward end of the yoke-shaped part of the frame with which said clevis-block is connected carries a vertically-adjustable bar 27, the lower end of which is provided with a backwardly-directed foot 28, and the object of this device is to support the forward end of the harrow-frame parallel with the rear end thereof, so as to prevent the harrow-teeth from passing too deeply into the ground. The said foot 28 in the operation of the harrow slides over the surface of the ground, as will be readily understood. The harrow-teeth 17 are of such form as to clean themselves under all condi tions and in all kinds of ground, and my improved harrow will not become clogged or choked up, as frequently occurs in this class of devices, and it will be apparent that any desired number of the teeth 17 may be employed and they may be relatively arranged in any desired manner.
It will be observed that the rear cross-bar 11 of the frameis provided at each end with a spindle, by means of which connection is made with the vertically-adj ustable standards 8, and in Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of construction, in which the sulky feature of my improvement is eliminated, and in this form of construction I mount on the end spindles of the rear crossbar 11 blocks or bearings 29, which are provided on their under sides with flat projections 30, which are flush with the under side of said cross-bar, and passing vertically through said blocks are standards 31, which are provided at their lower ends each with a short stub-axle 32, on which is mounted a small wheel 33, and the rear cross-bar 11 of the harrow-frame is vertically adjustable on the standards 31, said standards and the blocks 29 being provided with perforations 3*, through which is passed a pin or bolt 35. The form and construction of the harrow in this construction are exactly the same as those hereinbefore described, and the operation will be substantially the same, the wheels 33 and the shoe 7o 28 serving to prevent the harrow-teeth from passing too deeply into the ground.
In Fig. 5 I have shown another modified form of construction, said figure being a side view similar to Fig. 3, and in this form of construction the rear cross-bar of the frame of the harrow shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 and all parts connected therewith are omitted, and the rear ends of the supplemental side arms 13 are provided with clamp-blocks 36, having keepers 37, through which the standards 31 are passed, and these standards are provided at their lower ends withthe stub-axles 32 and the wheels 33. This form of construction is particularly adapted for cultivating or garden work, but may be employed wherever desired, and a single horse will be sufficient to draw the same.
It will be observed that in each of the forms of construction herein shown and described object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and opera tion, and which may be used for various purposes, and which is also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made Without departing from the spirit of myinventiou or sacrificing its advantages.
By curving the harrow-teeth, as herein shown and described, I provide means where- IO 5 collect on the teeth being thrown backwardly 1 to over said teeth and over that portion of the frame with which the teeth are connected, and it will be observed that in each of the forms of construction herein shown and described the harrow-frame is vertically adj ust- 1 I 5 able, and I thus provide means to regulate the extent to which the harrow-teeth may be allowed to pass into the ground, said harrowteeth being of such shape that unless devices of this kind are provided the harrow would :20
not operate.
I-laving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A barrow-tooth of the form herein described, said tooth being provided centrally with a backwardly-directed arm by which it may besecured to a support, and the point the rear end of Which is connected with the lower ends of said standard, and the front end of which is provided with a vertically=adj ustable support, said frame being provided with teeth, the points of which project downwardly and forwardly, and the opposite ends upwardly and backwardly over the frame,

4. In a device of the class herein described, an axle provided with end wheels, verticallyadjustable standards connected with said axle at or near each end thereof, a barrow-frame the rear end of which is connected with the lower ends of said standards, and the front end of which is provided with a vertically-adj ustable support, said frame being provided with teeth, substantially as shown and de= scribed.
