To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, SAMUEL ALEXANDER BRAGUNIER, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, PARKER MADI- SON BRAGUNIER, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, and FRANK JOSEPH BRAGUNIER, of 'lopekafln the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have inventeda new and Improved Mail-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved mail-box which is simple and durable in construction, not liable to be opened by unauthorized persons to abstract its contents, and removable to permit its use on eitheran ordinary front door or on ascreen door.

This invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of theimprovement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 4is a perspective view of the receiving drop-door, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the closure for the receptacle.

The improved mail-box is provided with a receptacle or receiving-box A, formed in its top with an opening A, normally closed by a weighted drop-door B, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings, the letter to be delivered being passed through the opening A to the interior of the receiving-box or receptacle by swinging the drop-door downward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

In the front of the receiving-box or receptacle A and near the lower end thereof is formed an opening A normally closed by a slide 0 to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to the box; but upon opening the door to which the mail-box is applied the slide can be lifted above the opening A to permit the operator to pass a hand into the receptacle for removing the contents thereof. The slide 0 is provided on its sides with lugs C extending through verticallydisposed slots A formed in the sides of the box or receptacle A, and one of said lugs 0 passes under a catch or a lug D at the time the door on which the mail-box is attached is closed, so that the slide 0 cannot be lifted out of its normal position.

In using the mail-box the receptacle A- is attached to the door and the catch D is attached to the casing, or the catch is attached to the door and the receptacle is attached to the casing. In either case the relation of the two parts is such that the lug 0 passes under the catch D when the door is closed, so that unauthorized persons cannot lift the slide 0 to gain access to the interior of the box by way of the opening A to remove the contents of the receptacle.

The lower end of the receptacle A is provided with a curved arm E, adapted to support newspapers and the like.

It is evident that when the device is applied a letter-carrier or other person can readily drop letters or other mail-matter through the opening A and drop-door B into the receptacle A, and. when it is desired to remove the contents of the receptacle the rightful owner, after opening the door to which the mail-box is attached, lifts the lugs O and latch D out ofengagement with each other to permit of lifting the slide 0 to gain access to the interior'of the box for removing the contents of the mail-box. When this has been done, the slide O is permitted to drop by its own gravity to its former position, and upon closing the door the lugs O and catch D again engage with each other to prevent the slide from being raised as long as the door is closed.

Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A mail-box comprising the receptaclev vIO in its sides and located one on. each side of the last-named opening, a slide fitted to move vertically in said receptacle and adapted to close the opening in the front of the receptacle, the said slide being formed at each side with 2. lug extending through an adjacent slot to the outside of the receptacle and a device for engaging one of said lugs when the door on which the box is used is closed, the two lugs assisting in guiding the slide in its movement and enabling it to be locked from either side, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A mail-box, comprisinga receptacle having an inlet-opening and an opening through which to remove the contents of the boX, and a vertically-movable slide in said receptacle, said side being adapted to close said lastnamed opening and having a lug extending through a side of the receptacle to the outside thereof, there being provided a second lug adapted to engage with the lug of the slide when the door on which the receptacle is used is closed whereby to prevent the raisin g of the slide as shown and described.

3. A mail-box, comprising the receptacle having an inlet-opening at its top and an opening in its front near the lower end thereof through which to remove the mail, said receptacle being also provided with vertical slots in its sides", the said slots being located one on each side of the last-named opening,
