(NITED STATES PATENT FFIQE.
HUGH CAMPBELL, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM THOMPSON, OF SAME PLACE.
CONSTRUCTION OF M ONUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,943, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed September 17, 1898. Serial No. 691,139. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH CAMPBELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented.
cost of production as to enable people of very moderate means to provide suitable gravestones for their departed relatives and friends.
The invention consists in the adaptation of sheet metals by means of forms or dies to the manufacture of monuments of various designs, as will be fully set forth in the following specification and claim and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, of Which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showinga monument of simple design and constructed of metal in accordance with my improvements,Fig. 2 being a sectional plan view taken on line X X of Fig. 1 and showing the manner of securing the metal shell firmly to its base.
The shell A may have its several sides ornamented, as may be desired, by tablets, wreaths, &c., by the aid of dies or forms, and the dates of birth and death, as well as the name and any desired inscription relative to the departed, may be affixed in the same manner, and said sides are then secured together by being seamed and brazed, after which the monument is painted and finished in imitation of granite, marble, or other stone.
The lower portion of the monument or shell A is made to closely fit over a base B, which may be formed of cement, stone, or metal, and provided at intervals in its sides with vertical grooves or recesses b, in each of which is provided a spindle or dowel b, rising vertically from the larger lower portion of the base B, as shown, and in which said dowels are firmly set.
The shellA is provided interiorly, at or near its bottom, with loops or sockets a, which register with and are adapted to receive the dowels b of the base B, as shown.
In will be noted that the sockets extending into the recesses in the base serve to more securely anchor the shell and that the lower ends of the sockets will serve to support the shell in the event of the latter being slightly larger than the flange of the base intended for its reception. The dowels further serve to prevent lateral movement of the shell in any direction in the event of any slight deterioration of the upper part of the base or where the fit between the parts is not absolutely accurate.
Having described my invention, what I claim is An imitation grave-stone comprising a metal shell provided with substantially semicylindrical sockets upon its interior face, a base provided with vertical recesses in its face for the reception of the sockets, said base having an enlargement at its bottom and dowels projecting upwardly from the enlargement and into the sockets, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGH CAMPBELL.
