FRANK RI-IIND, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE BRIDGEPORT BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
AC ETYLENE- 'GAS o E'N ERATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,829, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed August 5, 1898. Serial No; 687,767. (No model-) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK RHIND, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Bridgeport, Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Acetylene- Gas Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for decreasing the possibility of accident in the use of I o acetylene-generators,especially those of small size, as of portable lamps. It provides a relief-valve simple in character and protected from injury.
The accompanying drawing shows in ele- I 5 vation, partly broken away, a lamp embodying my invention.
1 designates a gas=generator formed with top 12 and outlet 13; 2, a valve-chamber provided with outlet 21; 3, a valve-seat; 4:, a
washer; 5, a valve, and 6 a spring.
In the example of my invention illustrated in the drawing the gas-generator 1 may also serve as a carbid-chamber or it may contain a separate receptacle, as a bag or boX, (not 25 shown,) for the carbid. From the top 12 of the generator lpasses a gas-outlet 13, shown as a burner Within a suitable combustionchamber. Secured within the suitably-recessed top 12 is a valve-chamber 2, having an outlet 21, shown as a small tube leading to the tip of the burner 13. Adjustably secured, as by a screw-thread, in the lower end of the chamber 2 is a removable annular valve-seat 3, carrying a washer 4 of rubber 3 5 or other packing material. A valve 5,which is preferably a disk of glass or other non corrosive material, rests on the washer 4. A spring 6 bears against the disk 5 to hold it in place.
4.0 The operation of my device will be clearly understood from an inspection of the draw- 'ing.
Gas formed in the generator 1 escapes by the outlet 13 and may be lighted at once. If
for any reason an excess of gas is produced, it will lift the valve-disk 5 and permit the gas to flow through the relatively free outlet 21.
This, as shown, is contracted at its upper end to form a small orifice near the burner-tip, so that the gas is consumed at the flame. The gas thus issuing from a small emission-orifice and under pressure burns with a clear flame and does not tend to smoke the reflectingsurfaces of the combustion-chamber. The strength of the spring 6 and the manual adj ustment of the seat 3 predetermine the point at which the relief-valve acts.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the form, proportions, particularcombination, or uses shown. Infact, many mechanical alterations are possible without departing from its essentialities.
What I claim is 1. In combination a gas-generator, a gasburner connected with said generator, a relief-valve directly exposed to the gas-pressure in said generator and an outlet connected with said valve and adapted to convey gas passing said valve to a point adjacent to said burner, substantially as described.
2. In combination a gas-generator, a gasoutlet from said generator and provided with a burner-tip, a valve-chamber opening into said generator independently of said outlet, at valve-seat, a valve normally resting on said 7 5 seat and adapted to be raised therefrom by gas-pressure in said generator and a gas-outlet from said chamber and adapted to convey gas passing said valve to a point adjacent to said burner, substantially as described.
3. In combination a gas-generator, a valvechamber opening into said generator, avalveseat, a disk of glass or other non-corrosive material normally resting on said seat and adapted to be raised therefrom by gas-pressure in said generator and an outlet from said chamber exterior to said generator, substantially as described.
4. In combination a gas-generator, a gasburner connected with said generator,a valve 0 chamber opening into said generator, a removable valve-seat, a disk normally resting on said seat and adapted to be raised therefrom by gas-pressure in said generator and an outlet-tube leading from said Valve-chamber substantially as described for manually vato a point adjacent to said burner, substanrying the pressure of said disk on said seat IO tially as described. 1 and an outlet from said chamber exterior to 5. In combination a gas-generator, a valve- I said generator.
