APPARATUS POR RAlslN'e OR LOWERING SHIPSJ BOATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,81Q, dated April 25, 1899.
Application ned January 9, 1899.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM MCQUOID, Jr., joincr, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 9 Roxburgh street, Greenock, county of Renfrew, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Raising or Lowering Ships Boats, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats; and in Order that my said invention may be properly understood I have hereunto appended two explanatory sheets of drawings, whereon- Figure l is a side elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan of the apparatus.. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line :n m, Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Referring to the drawings, the same reference-letters wherever repeated indicate the same parts.
In carrying out the invention I lit, in connection with each davit d, a winding-drum on which the lowering-falls l) can be wound.
These drums c c are mounted upon a shaft d, driven by means of bevel-gearing e from a vertical s haft f with a worm-wheel g thereon, which is operated by a worm 7i on a cross driving-shaft t', provided with a hand-wheel Fitted in connection with the drum-shaft d is a band-brake 7.a, with operating-sore w 7c. The band is hinged at k2, (see Fig. 4,) and when the screw is operated the said band is forced into frictional contact with the wheel k3 on the shaftd, so as to brake it. If so desired, an ordinary band-brake and lever may be used.
In order to throw the driving-shaft z' into and out of gear whenever necessary, a wormshaft Z is provided, having two worms Z Z2 on it, which operate two screwed shafts 'm m', working through the bearing-blocks o 0 of the driving-shaft. These bearing-blocks are made so as to move backward and forward on guides p, carried by the supports q. If desired, a clutch shifting-gear may be used instead of the worm shifting-gear hereinbefore described.
Serial No. 701,569. (No model.)
The davits d can be turned in their sockets so as to throw the boat inboard or outboard by means of the shafts r r', which when oper- Aments or halves (see Fig. and be bolted to or strapped to the davits, as shown.
The shafts r r are operated by the bevelgears u u, actuated by the shafts o o. Each shaft c, as shown, carries at its upper end a worm-wheel w, which gears with a worm Each worm m is carried by a shaft y, and each shaft y is' operated by a hand-wheel y or a crank and handle.
To vguide the falls onto the drums, swiveling guide-pulleys .e may be used.
Each rope or fall l) is, as shown, passed over guide-pulleys b b' b on each davit to the hook or shackle h2 at the boat B.
If desired, a single drum may be fitted on the shaft, and upon this drum both ropes l) may be wound.
The parts of the apparatus may be arranged A what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters f Patent, is-
1. In boat raising and lowering gear the combination of the swiveled davits, the falls, the winding-drum shaft, a bevel-wheel on the shaft gearing with a bevel-wheel ona second. shaft, a worm-wheel on said second shaft, a third shaft, a worm on said third shaft gearing with the worm-wheel of the second shaft and means for revolving said third shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. In boat raising and lowering gear the combination of the swiveled davits, the falls, the winding-drum shaft, worm and wormwheel gear for revolving said shaft, a shaft carried in bearings and operated by hand for actuating the worm-gear, screwed spindles passed through the bearing-blocks of the said bearings and worm-gearing operated by hand foi` revolving' said screwed spindles substaning operated by hand foi revolving said vel*- tially as set forth. tical shafts, substantially as set forth. 1o
3. In boat raising and lowering gear lhe Signed at. Greenock this 17th day of De'- eombination of the davits Worm-Wheels on eembel, 1898.
