SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 623,179, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed April 16, 1898. Serial No. 677,825, (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, RODOLPHUS PEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Escondido, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Hod-Crushers, Levelers, and Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined clodcrusher, leveler, grader, 850.; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of the several parts more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In preparing the ground for planting and other purposes as heretofore carried on several independent machines have usuallybeen employed for harrowing, rolling or crushing, and grading or leveling, necessitating going over the same surface a number of times corresponding to the number of machines used to attain the desired result, and as a consequence the time and labor involved have been materially increased and the operation rendered very tedious.
The object of the presentinvention is to provide a machine of the character specified embodying the several devices heretofore operated individually for attaining at one operation a thorough preparation of the ground and obviating the inconveniences heretofore encountered where several successive applications of different devices were necessary, and thereby lighten labor and reduce the expense of agricultural machinery of this class by unifying a number of machines in one.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved machine. Fig. 2 is a similar view with a portion of the parts removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates the main f rame,c0mprising longitudinal end bars 2 and transverse cross-bars 3 connected thereto. The end bars 2 are heavier than the said crossbars, and running parallel with and located between said cross-barsis a supporting-bar eler to serve as means for attaching the pivots. The rear lower portion 9 is beveled off toward the front to reduce the lower edge, and a wear-strip 10 is secured over the front and has its lower edge slightly depending below the lower edge of said scraper or leveler. This construction is employed when the scraper or leveler is in the main formed of wood; but when metal alone is used for the same purpose the straps 7 and strip 10 will be dispensed with. In the rear upper part of said scraper an operating-platform 11- is hinged, as at 12, and freely extends to the rear over the supporting-bar 4, the latter acting as a fulcrum for the operation of the scraper or leveler.
At the rear end of the frame a breaking-up or harrowing roll 13 is movably mounted and has a series of teeth let therein, arranged at predetermined regular intervals, and to operate this roll a lever 15 is connected thereto and extends upwardly through the top of the frame adjacent the inner edge of the support 5 on the right, where a toothed locking-plate 16 is located and adapted for use in holding the said lever in adjusted position. Through the medium of said lever the roll 13 is turned to bring the teeth in various positions and regulate the depth of penetration or entirely raise them from the ground.
Between the roll 13 and the scraper or leveler 6 a series of stationary rolls 17 are secured to the under side of the frame, and in the present instance three are shown employed. The number of these rolls may be increased or decreased, and when made of wood, as illustrated, preferably have a metallic covering 18; but it will be understood that the spirit of the invention would still be preserved if said rolls were formed entirely of metal, and it is intended to so construct them, if desired.
Across the upper part of the rolls 17 extend diagonal braces 19 and reinforce and tie them together to resist strain brought to bear thereon. The said rolls serve as crushers or clod-breakers and are bolted to the end bars, as at 20.
Secured to the rearmost of rolls 17 are the lower ends of a guard-rail 21, which extends upwardly and forwardly at an incline, being in the main above the top of the machine, and has a top cross-bar 22. is in convenient position to be gripped by the operator, and thereby avoid accident owing to the jolting and general uneven and irregular movement of the device. To the front central part of the machine a draft ring or eye 23 is shown for attachment of draft devices; but this is not an essential arrangement, as other well-known appurtenances could be readily substituted therefor.
All the parts of the machine, or only a part of the same, could be constructed entirely of metal, and in some instances wood alone might be used, and changes in the proportions, dimensions, and details of construction could be resorted to without departingfrom the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof;
Under the circumstances wherein legitimate changes are contemplated the salient features of the invention are preserved and the operation will be as follows: The draftanimals are connected up to the front of the frame and the machine moved over the surface of the ground to be treated. The scraper or-leveler is brought into working position by the operator disposing his weight on the platform 11, and'the degree of pressure or penetration is regulated by the said operator moving rearwardly or forwardly on said platform. When a pressure is exerted on the forward part of said platform, the lower edge of the scraper or leveler will be upon the surface of the ground. .The lumps or clods are leveled off by said scraper and the whole subsequently actedupon by the crushing-rolls 17 and finally by the toothed breaking-up or harrowing roll 13. The function of the scraper, in the main, is to prepare the ground in advance of and to be efiectually crushed by the rolls 17; but some of the larger lumps or clods will necessarily be broken up by striking said scraper. The roll 13 might not be needed at This guard-rail various times and can be quickly thrown out and to do this both the scraper 6 and the roll 13 will be thrown out of engaging position. Thus it will be seen that several operations can be carried on at one time while the machine 1s traveling over the ground and the necessity of separate devices for the same purpose is avoided, and consequently I save time and labor and afford means for obtaining an expeditious tillage of the soil.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is- 1. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a scraper or lev eler at the front thereof, a platform hinged to said scraper or leveler for operating the same, an adjustable rear toothed roll, a lever for moving said rear roll, and intermediate stationary crushing-rolls.
2. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a scraper or leveler pivoted to the front lower portion thereof, a tilting platform hinged to said scraper, a fulcrum-bar on which said platform rests, a rear adjustable toothed bar, an operatingle'ver attached to said toothed bar, intermediate stationary crushing-rolls, and upper supports on opposite sides of said platform, one of which has a toothed plate for engagement by said lever.
3. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a scraper and leveler at the front of the frame, an operatingplatform hinged at the front and extending rearwardly over the top of the central portion of the frame, a fulcrum-bar on which said platform rests, stationary supports on opposite sides of and parallel with said operating-platform, a series of stationary crushing-rolls in rear of the scraper or leveler, a
guard-rail secured to the rearmost of said crushing-rolls and extending upwardly and forwardly a rear adjustable toothed or harrowing roll, and a lever connected to said harrowing-roll and extending upwardly'through the top of the frame.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RODOLPIIUS PEET.
