DEVICE FOR HOLDING PACKING.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT BALL, a resident of Olaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Holding Packings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to a device for holding and fastening packing.

For the purpose of packing piston-valves and pistons for driving-valves located in the air-chests of coal-cutting, rock, and like machines where air is used the common practice has been to use metal rings to prevent leakage, such as are used for ordinary pistons operated in cylinders. The diameter of these pistons is usually so small that metal rings do not work as well as on pistons of larger diameter, so that many of such pistons are used without any means for preventing leakage, and when they get worn so as to leak badly new ones have to be substituted. lVhen metal rings are used, the rings can be renewed, but they are very troublesome to put in place; but where leather or like flexible material is employed the trouble is obviated, as the leather can be used a long time without leakage and when worn out can easily be replaced by new ones.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for holding leather or like flexible packing securely in place and one which can bequickly adjusted for the purpose of securing the packing or releasing the same when worn out. I

To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.

' To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is alongitudinal section of a suitable air-chest with a piston-valve therein and showing myinvention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the device for holding and fastening the packing removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a modified form of my invention.

\Vhile I will describe my invention as applied to the packing of a valve-piston such as is employed in the air-chest of a coal-cutting machine, yet I do not wish to limit my invention in any Way to this particular application of it, but desire to include within its scope all the uses to which it may be found applicable.

These bearing-faces form seats for the leather or like flexible packing e. Pressing against the packing e and adapted to hold said packing tightly against the bearing-faces cl cl are the holders ff. The holders ff are held against the packing by means of the rods or bolts g, the ends g of said rods fitting in seats 71, formed for them in the holder f. Two of these rods g are shown, although it is apparent that the number maybe increased, if desired. The opposite ends of said rods g are threaded and engage with the threaded seats ?I, formed in the holder f. Check-nuts 7r, engage the threaded portion of said rods and are adapted to lock said rods in position when once they have been properly adjusted. The rods are provided with the enlargements Z, by means of which they may be readily turned.

From the above construction it is readily apparent that when it is desired to force the holders ff against the packing c it is only necessary to turn the rods g until the proper impression of the packing has been reached, whereupon the nuts 10 are screwed up to hold the rods in this position. The holders force the packing into close contact with the bearing-faces d d and form a very tight joint, so that all leakage is practically precluded. When the packing Wears out, it is a very simple operation to release the rods 9 and remove the packing and substitute new packing therefor.

In the form above illustrated the pistons 12 c are of different diameters; but it is apparent that both pistons can be of the same size without affecting the invention. By having the rods g threaded into the holderf the holder cannot fall therefrom when handled.

1. The combination with a suitable shell or I casing having a cylindrical chamber therein and an annular bearing-face snrroundin g the same, of a packing of flexible material, a holder adapted to hold said packing against said bearing-face, a rod extending out from said holder, a stop for said rod, and .means' with annular bearing-faces surrounding the same, of a packing of flexible material, holders adapted to hold said packing against said bearing-faces, rods extending from one holder to the other and means for forcing said holders against said packing, substantially as set forth.
