SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,124, 'dated April 18, 1899. Application filed December 14, 1898. Serial No. 699,199. (No model.)

Be itknown that LSAMUEL R. BAILEY,a citizen of theUnited States,residin g at Amesbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Axle-Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable axle-nuts especially designed for carriage-axles either with or Without ballbearings for the purpose of setting up from time to time and adjusting the position of the axle-nut relative to the end of the Wheel-hub, its Washer, or cone-bearing and holding said nut securelyin its adj usted position Without the employment of check-nuts, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,`ivherein-+ Figure l represents a side elevation of the invention. In the drawings, A represents the outer end portion of a carriage-axle, and B represents the Washer or cone-bearing longitudinally adj ustable on said axle end, as usual.
Centrally Within the outer end of the axle A is made a longitudinal recess A', the inner end of which is made reduced or tapering, as shown at A in Fig. 3. The outer end of said recess is provided with an internal screwthread A3, as shown in said Fig. 3.
C represents the head of the improved axlenut, which head may be cylindrical, as shown in Fig. 2, and adapted to be adj usted by means of a suitable Spanner, or it may be made polygonal for adjustment by means of an ordinary Wrench or other suitable tool commonly used for such purpose without departing from the essence of my invention.
The head C is provided with a longitudinally-slitted expansive shank C', the outer end of Which is screw-threaded, as shown at C", and made adjustable Within the corresponding internal screw-thread A3 in the carriage-axle, as shown in Fig. 3.
The inner ends of the bifurcated or slitted shank C terminatezas tWo or morepreferablytapering lateral projections C3 C3, adapted to be held frictionally in contact with the reduced or tapering recess A in the axle during the adjustment of the axle-nut, as shown in Fig. 3. It Will thus be noticed that the axlenut shank is held frictionallyin position after being adjusted by the pressure of the expansive projections C3 C3 of the slitted or bifurcated shank against the tapering or reduced seat A in the bored-out axle, thus eftectually preventing the nut from Working loose by the jarring of the vehicle. Instead of compressing the slitted shank C C' against the interior bore A' of the axle A it may, if so desired, be forced frictionally against a conical plug or expander A4, arranged in the bottom of the recess A', as shown in Fig. 6, by which arrangement the ends of the slitted shank C C are caused to be held frictionally in con-f tact with said plug or expander during the adjustment of the axle-nut for the purpose of retaining the latter in its adjusted posi-A tion, as he'reinbefore described. It Will be seen that by this arrangement I dispense entirely with the ordinary set-nut usually employed in devices of this kind, and by the arrangement as shown and described the axlenut can be most easily and quickly adjusted simply by turning a single piece-namely,
the head C of the device.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I Wish to secure by Letters Patent and claiml. The herein-described adj ustable-axlenut device, consisting in combination with an axle having a longitudinal, recess, screwthreaded at its outer lend and tapered or reduced at its inner end, a screw-threaded slitted shank adjustable within the screw-thread of the axle and having its open slitted ends adapted to be frictionally held against the inner portion of the axle-recess, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
