SECTION-INSULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,631, dated March 21, 1899.
Application filed March 5, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, EDWARD J. 000K, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Section-Insulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'improvements in section-insulators for trolley systems of electric railways; and the object of my invention is to produce an insulator to be used between the different sections of overhead or trolley lines which will be simple in construction and efficient in operation and adapted to withstand the longitudinal strain of the trolleywires.
The invention consists in the various constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a device, showing my invention, some of the parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one of the end pieces of my device. In constructing my improved insulator I employa main portion or body a, which may be made of wood or any suitable insulating material. The lower ends of said main portion are cut away to form seats for end pieces a at". These end pieces are preferably made of metal and formed with a toothpick-point a which extends beyond the end of the body a. The flanges are enlarged at their centers and tapped and screw-threaded within to receive the studscrews 61/ which extend through the body from the top. The end pieces are formed with laterally-projecting and downwardly-extending flanges at which are adapted to break the are by contacting with the flanges of the trolley-wheel, and thus gradually pressing the trolley-wheel out of contact with the bottom of the end piece, thus preventing the burning of the insulating material at the bottom where it joins the end piece and forms a track for the trolley; Said flanges extend in- Wardly past the body of the endpieces, so if any are occurs it will be between the trolley and flanges and not along the track portion or the bottom of the insulator. The end pieces are formed with toothpick-points at their outer lower ends, as shown in the drawings. These toothpick-points are adapted to guide the trolley-wheel onto the insulator and to carry said wheel gradually from the wire to the plane of the body of the insulator at its lower side.
The lower edge of the body between the end pieces is preferably straight and on a line with the inner lower corners of said end pieces and, if desired, may be separate from the main body, so as to be removable therefrom, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The lower edges of the end pieces extend slightly upwardly from their inner to their outer or toothpick ends.
The wire Z is adapted to extend into the inner end of the channel a which has inclined or wedge-shaped walls, and around this por tion I fit a chuck, which is serrated on itsinner periphery, and formed on its outer periphery to conform to the enlarged portion of the channel. This chuck is preferably split, so that the harder the strain on the wire the tighter the chuck will hold it on account of its wedge-shaped outer periphery, the serrations in the chuck being adapted to seat themselves in the soft wire.
It is obvious that different means may be employed for securing the wire in the chan nel, and I do not limit myself to any particular device.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8 I have shown a modification of the end piece for my device. In this device the end piece is formed flat on top and has a transverse rib or flange 73 which accomplishes the same object as the flange 0.
The wire-channel or that portion of it in the toothpick end is formed in the nature of a chamfered groove open at the bottom. In this the enlarged portion of the channel is formed with a square shoulder 19. The end of the wire is upset, and the enlarged portion of the wire is adapted to rest against the shoulders b. This end piece is provided with an arm I), which extends upwardly along the end of the body and along the top and above the enlarged portion of the wire-channel. The end piece is secured to the body by means of a bolt 6 which passes through the arm I), through the body, and into the body of the end piece.

The part below the channel is formed in the nature of a fin and extends downwardly and inwardly to the body portion.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- I 1. A metallic end piece for section-insulators having a wire-channel, a toothpick end and an arc-breaking flange, substantially as specified.
2. In a metallic end piece for section-insulators, a wire-channel enlarged at its inner end, a trolley-wire and means for holding same in said channel, a toothpick end, and an arcbreaking flange extending beyond the inner end of said end piece, substantially as specified.
3. In a metallic end piece for section-insulators, the combination of a wire-channel enlarged at its inner end and having inclined walls, a toothpick outer end, a trolley-wire within said channel and means for fastening said trolley-wire to said wire-channel.
