ROLLER AXLE BOX.
( pplication (No Model.)
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW ROBINSON, JRI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROLLER AXLE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,673, dated March '7, 1899. Application filed March 9,1898. Serial No. 673,260. (No model.)
To aZZ whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW ROBINSON, Jr. a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller Axle- Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to axle-boxes which are provided with roller-bearings and the object is to provide an axle-box of this description which shall be simple in construction and of few parts and in which economy of space shall be combined with strength and durability.
The invention consists of a roller axle-box constructed substantially as hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the improved axle-box, showing the interior construction of the hub and the arrangement of the spokes; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. 4
Referring to the drawings, A represents the hub, which may be of any ordinary or preferred exterior form and is provided with the usual sockets for the reception of the usual spokes A. The hub A is centrally bored, forming an outer chamber a and an inner chamber a of somewhat greater diameter. The inner end of the inner chamber a is provided with grooves a for the reception of the wings I) of the inner bushing B. An annular chamber is formed in the bore of the bushing 13, in which are placed the rollers O.
The outer portion of the bore of the bushin gB is provided with screw-threads, in which is secured a collar 5, having an annular groove forming the second bearing for the rollers O. Secured in the threaded portion of the bore of the bushing Bis a sleeve D, the inner end d of which is enlarged to fit the threaded bore of the bushing B, and the outer end of the body portion cl is threaded to re-- their bearings in annular rings 6 e.
ceive an iuteriorly and exteriorly threaded ring (F. The body portion (1 of the sleeveD is constructed of a diameter slightly greater than the spindle G, and the bore of the hub is just of sufficient size to receive the said body portion. Thus it will be seen that by reason of my improved axle-box the hub is greatly strengthened at the weakest point or at the point where the spoke-sockets are formed. An outer bushing E is threaded upon the ring 01 and is provided with an annular chamber for the reception of the rollers C,which have The outer face of the bushing E is recessed to receive the axle-nut G and is provided with suitable notches e to accommodate a wrench for removing the bushing E.
From the above description it is evident that the various parts forming the improved axle-box can be readily adjusted to take up wear and that they may be easily removed and cleaned or replaced. Furthermore, by reason of the small diameter of the sleeve D, the bore of the hub may be comparatively small, thus materially increasing the strength of the hub and afiording deep spoke-sockets and a comparatively large bearing for the spokes.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the hub of a vehicle, provided with a central bore which is enlarged at both ends to form cylindrical chambers, the chamber at the inner end of the hub being larger than that at the outer end thereof, of a spindle-box consisting of a sleeve which is adapted to fit in the'central portion of said bore, the inner end thereof being provided with an enlarged screwthreaded annular head which projects into the chamber at the inner end of the hub, a cylindrical bushing which fits in said cham* her and which is connected with said head and through which the spindle passes, said bushing being provided around said spindle with an annular chamber, a detachable ring or collar mounted in said bushing adjacent to said head, rollers mounted between said collar and the outer end of said bushing, a collar at the outer end of said sleeve and a cylindrical bushing through which the spindle passes and which fits the cylindrical chamber in the outer end of the hub, said bushing being also provided with an annular chamber around said spindle, a detachable ring mounted in said chamber adjacent to the outer end of said bushing, acollar fitting in the inner end of said chamber adjacent to the outer end of said sleeve and rollers mounted between said ring and said collar, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the hub of a vehicle, provided with a central bore which is enlarged at both ends to form cylindrical chambers, the chamber at the inner end of the hub being larger than that at the outer end, of a spindle-box consisting of a sleeve which is adapted to fit the central portion of said bore, the inner end thereof being provided with an enlarged screw-threaded head which projects into the chamber at the inner end of the hub, a cylindrical bushing which fits in said chamber and which is screwed,
onto said head, and through which the spindle passes, said bushing being provided around said spindle with an annular chamber,
a detachable ring or collar mounted in said chamber adjacent to said head, rollers mounted in said chamber between said ring or collar and the outer end of said bushing, a collar at the outer end of said sleeve, and a cylindrical bushing through which the spindle passes and which bushing fits the cylinderchamber in the outer end of the hub, said bushing being also provided with an annular chamber around said spindle, and two rings or collars mounted in said chamber, rollers mounted between said rings or collars, the said bushing at the inner end of the hub be ing also provided with means for preventing it from turning therein, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of March, 1898.
ANDREW ROBINSON, JR.
