UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN I). IVALLACE, OF WIIEATLAND, INDIANA.
FIRE-ALARM.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,526, dated January 31, 1899.
' Application filed June 1, 1898. Serial No. 682,244. (No model.)
To (Z5 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLINDWVALLAOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVheatland, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fire-Alarm, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fire-alarms.
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap and eliicient alarm of the class described in which the circuit closing or openingmechanism is released by the melting or burning of a fusible plug.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention and properly illustrates the same.
' In the drawing, 1 indicates a pivoted lever one arm of which is heavier than the other. This excess of weight may be produced by means of an adjustable weight 2, if desired. Lever 1 is preferably pivoted upon a standard 3, which may be secured to a wall or a suitable base 4. The standard 3 is provided with an opening 5 and a binding-screw 6, by means of which a wire 7, forming part of an alarnrcircuit, may be attached. The lighter end of the lever l is arranged to be engaged by a non-conducting fusible plug or stop 8, the inner end of which is received within a socket 9 and the outer end of which is supported within an eye 10, formed in the outer end of a rod or wire 11, the inner end of which is provided with suitable means by which it may be secured to the base 4. A portion 12 of the rod 11 is substantially at right angles to the lever 1, and longitudinally mounted upon this portion is a collar 18, provided with a pair of spring-fingers 14 ll, which may be arranged to receiveat times the lever 1. The inner end of therod is provided with an opening 15 and a binding-screw 16, by means of which a wire 17, forming a part of an alarm-circuit, may be attached.
In order to prevent the burning or fusing of the stop 8 from injuring the contact-places, I mount upon lever 1 a shield 18, which ex tends up over the said stop when in position, as shown in the drawing.
In order to set the device, the lighter end of the lever 1 is thrown down until it lies below the socket 9. A fusible plug 8 is then inserted through eye 10 and into socket 9 above the lever, thus holding it out of its normal position in the position shown in the drawing. In case the temperature of the room rises above the fusing-point of the plug the said plug melts, thus releasing the lever 1 and allowing it to swing, owing to the action of the weighted end, into engagement with the fingers 1%, thus closing the alarm circuit.
It will be readily understood that the fingers lat may be so placed as to be engaged by any portion of the lever 1 or that the parts may be so arranged as to form a closed circuit, which will be broken by the fusing of the plug 8 and the consequent movement of the swinging lever. It will also be understood that the lever 1 may swing directly into contact with the portion 12 of the arm 11 instead of the fingers 14:, if desired, the said fingers being merely introduced to insure a better contact.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lever having a weighted end and pivoted upon a standard arranged to form one terminal of an alarm-circuit, of a second terminal arranged in the path of movement of said lever, means for holding a fusible plug or stop in position to maintain said lever out of its normal position, and a shield carried by said lever in position to project over such plug and thereby protect the second terminal.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lever having a weighted end and pivoted upon a standard arranged to form one terminal of an alarm-circuit, of a second terminal arranged in the path of movement of said lever, a pair of spring-fim gers carried by said second terminal in the path of movement of said lever, means for holding a fusible plug or stop in position to maintain the said lever out of its normal potion, substantially as described, and a shield carried by said lever in position to project over the plug and protect the second terminal.
