SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 618,475, dated January 31, 1899. Application filed December 31, 1897. Serial No. 664,822. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABBoT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Distributing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which theinvention appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the form of typedistributing machines disclosed in Patent N o. 245,562, dated August 9, 1881, in which the types are taken one by one from the end of a line, transferred to a conveyer, and deposited from the latter onto a type-distributing mechanism below; vand the invention consists, essentially, in limiting and restricting the downward thrust of the pusher by which the type is ejected from the conveyersubstantiall y in the manner as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation through the conveyer and adjoining parts in the position in which the types are received by the conveyer. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the conveyer, dro., at the moment of delivering the type; and Fig. 3 an edge view of the conveyer and adjoining parts.
A is the lifter by which the first type in a channel a is detached and raised into position to be grasped by the oscillating nippers B, by which the type is delivered to the conveyer O, which serves to deposit the same on a distributer standing ready to receive it. The nippers are composed of two jaws b h,which are mounted on a pin h2, having its bearing in the standard S, which rises from the carriage supporting the type-channel. The pin b2 turns freely in the standard S, and the jaw b is rmly secured to the pin, while the jaw b turns loosely thereon, being drawn up toward the jaw h by a spring, as will be readily understood by reference to the patent hereinbefore referred to.
The jaw b is longer than the jaw b, so that when the nippers swing back over the type the jaw h passes over its head, while the jaw h is arrested by reason of the pin b3 on the said jaw encountering the projection b4, eX- tending from the standard S. Thus the motion of the loose jaw is arrested just before it strikes the lirst type in a channel a, while the rigid jaw b proceeds and thereby the nippers are opened. At this moment the action of the lifter A takes place and the jawh of the nippers is carried back toward the jaw b', the nippers closing up and grasping the type and carrying it out to the position shown in Fig. 1. By this outward motion of the nippers the type is carried between the jaws of the conveyer O, as the nippers are somewhat narrower than the type, the jaws of the oonveyer close up as the type is grasped by said jaws and taken from the nippers, and then deposited on the distributer as heretofore.
The jaws of the conveyer are mounted on a rock-shaft R, which has its bearings in a bifurcated standard R', rising rom the basecylinder. Said conveyer consists of two jaws O O', which are connected by a hinged joint c3. The jaw O' is pivot-ally mounted on the rock-shaft R, while the jaw O2 turns loosely thereon and is adapted to open from or close up to the rigid jaw. In this rigid jaw is secured a spring-bolt c4, which tends constantly to open the loose jaw. The inward thrust of the said loose jaw is effected by mechanism described in said patent hereinbefore referred to and need not here be described.
On the inner surface of the rigid jaw O is secured the pusher P, which consists of a U- shaped lever having its fulcrum on a pivot p. Its tail is connected to a lever p', which eX- tends from the upper edge of the rigid jaw C. On the upper end of the lever p is secured the roller-stud, which engages with a cam D, secured to the standard R. Vhen the conveyer is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, the pusher P is forced outward by the action of the cam on the lever p', and the type previously held between the jaws is deposited upon the distributer underneath.
VThus far the description has been that of the construction and operation of the inachine as heretofore known and used.
The distinguishing feature of my presen-t construction consists in limiting the downward thrust of the pusher P, so that While the pusher loosens and delivers the type it can- IOO ings, the stop s is placed upon the jaw C in such position that it limits the downward movement of the inner arm of the lever QJ; but it is obvious that it might be otherwise arranged with a like result.

The combination with the nippers B, for transferring the types to the conveyor and with the distributing mechanism below for' receiving the types from the conveyer, of said eonveyer C, provided with the type-pusher P, and actuating mechanism, and with the stop s, for limiting the downward thrust of said pusher, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
