heated, the bars being supplied and drawn awayfrom the furnaceas desired, the furnace having end entrance andV exit openings outof line with each other and having means for moving the metal laterally, soas to brin gthe exit-opening.

Extending transversely through, the furnace at suitable intervals-are aseries of reversible' waterj-eooledrollers '8, upon which thenletal bars rest during the heating.v v The protr ud'V ing'ends of these rollers are provided withpipes-Q, vwhich lead through stuingboge's,
into water supply and exhaust chambers -10 and 11,' respectively, so that a continuous {vaterfcirculation may be maintained through therollers. At one vend of the rollers are provided `worm-wheels 12, which interniesh larly to those used for reheatingf metal after it is passed Athroughl one milland preparatory.
In the -drawin'gs, "2 represents ayseriesv of4 driven rolls leading from a mill or blooming' of general gectangular form, its exitend being closed byfa Water-cooled plate 6, having an with worms or screws upon a longitudinall shaft'f14j, bywhich aslowlrotary movement is given -to the rollers;` Atene side. of the fur'- nace vandv o'ver thefwater-cooled rollers are provided 1a series -of pushers 15 consisting of;A bars sli inglongitndnally in bearings 16 and connectedbylinks 17 with levers 18, which are vSWung.,by,rack f ald'fpin/ion mechanism 19, secured 't6' the" cornmonf'shaftO of the levers andactuateld bya hydraulic cylinder 21. e A.

It isevident that the piece maybe moved into position by the pusher-s Atheni-` selvesacting through the intermediate bars of metal, if desired. As the bars in the fur nace are slowly moved back and forth by therollers those portions vof their surface-'which rest upon the rollers are constantly changing,
kthe longitudinal movement of the bars being limited by the end plates 5 and 6r" YThe heat'is thusequalized upon the barsand rollers,l and blackeningof these portions of' thebars rest'- ing upoinhe'water-cooled roller-sis avoided.
` The advantages of my invention are numer- IOO ous, since the action ofthe device is practi- 7S each piece enters itis moved laterally by the cally automatic, the hars are uniformly and thoroughly reheated, and the apparatus is simple and effective in its working.
Many changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the device without departure from my invention, since l claiml. A heating-furnace having therein asingle series of transverse rollers arranged to allow metal bars to lie thereon, said' furnace having' entrance and exit openings out of alinement with each other laterally. y
i). A heating-furnace having a series of transverse rollers therein, and power-actuated pusl1er-hars extending through the side walls of the furnace and arranged to move the metal laterally along the length of the rollers.
3. A heating-furnace having` end plates provided with entrance and exit openings out of alinement with each other, a series of transverse rollers in the furnace, and means for rotating said rollers in either direction.
4. A heating-furnace having therein a single horizontal series of transverse rollers arranged to allow metal bars to lie thereon, means for water-cooling the said rollers,
means for rotating the-same in opposite'directions so as to give a slow backand-forth movement to the hars, and stops arranged to limit th'e endwise movement of the bars.
5. A heatingfurnaoe having at its ends en trance and exit openings out of lateral alinement with each other, transverse feed-rollers Within the furnace, and power-actuated pushers extending through the side wall andarranged. to move the. metal laterally on the rollers, said furnace having feed-rollers extending from its exit-openincf.
6. A heating-furnace having entrance and exit openings ont of alinernent with each other, a series of transverse power-actuated rollers within the furnace, pusher-bars extending throughv the side Walls of the furnace, and means foraetuating said bars to move the metal lengthwise of the rollers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
