To all 1072,0112, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. \VHARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Superior, in the county of Douglas and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Bottle, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bottles.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bottles and to provide a simple and inexpensive one adapted to be applied to all the uses of an ordinary bottle, but designed especially for the use of druggists, chemists, and the like where it is desirable to draw accurately any quantity of a liquid with disturbing any sediment.
A further object of theinvention is to economize shelf-space, to afford a flat conspicuous surface for a label, and to prevent mistakes in handling poisons and provide for bottles containing the same a simple and effective alarm mechanism adapted to be automatically sounded as the bottle is brought into position for decanting its contents.
Another object of the invention is to enable the contents of a bottle to be completely decanted without removing it from a shelf or other support.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a bottle constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a similar view .on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

1 designates a substantially triangular receptacle normally arranged with its upper side 2 horizontal and with its lower side 3 inclined, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, and the said bottle is provided at one end (its apex) with a laterallyprojecting neck l, extending forward from the front of the bottle and forming a discl1argespout, The spout is normally closed by a cap l, arranged vertical when covering the mouth of the bottle and hinged above the neck to an arm 5 of a frame or casing in which the receptacle or bottle is arranged. The cap is provided at its top with a vertical stem or shaft and has a horizontal L-shaped arm 4, arranged at right angles to the stem or shank, which is enlarged and perforated at its upper end to receive a pivot 44 for securing the cap to the arm 5. One portion of the L-shaped arm is arranged contiguous to the arm 5, and the other portion of said L-shaped arm is disposed parallel with the front of the frame or casing, being located in advance of the same in position to be engaged by an arm a of a rock-shaft 4 as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The rock-shaft 4: which is journaled in suitable bearings,has it arms 4 located near one of its ends and forked or bifurcated to receive the L-.-shaped arm. The other end of the rock-shaft is provided with a handle-arm by means of which the shaft is rocked. When the shaft is partially rotated to depress the forked or bifurcated arm P, the cover will be swung upward away from the neck of the bottle sufficiently to permit a free flow of the contents of the same.
The receptacle 1 is journaled at its apex in suitable bearing-openings of the front and rear walls of the casing, the horizontal neck 4 forming one of the journals. The other bearing 6 consists of a curved supportingfiange extending inward from the rear wall of the frame or casing. The casing, which may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably consists of a box of cardboard or similar material, and the flat front face of the box is adapted to support a label in a prominent position, so that it is in full View of the operator in manipulating the bottle.
The bottle is provided at its apex with a curved lower portion 1, extending transversely of the bottle or receptacle and conforming to the configuration of the lower portion of the neck and forming a continuation of the same to provide a depressed gutter for facilitating the flow of the contents of the bottle. The curved portion or gutter 1 slopes from the rear wall of the frame or casing to the neck of the bottle, and the bottom or lower side 3 of the same when brought into substantially a horizontal position has a slight slope toward the neck. This construction enables the entire contents of the bottle or receptacle to be readily decanted. The curved portion 1 of the bottle is arranged in the bearing 6 and forms a partial journal.
The bottleis elevated by means of a flexible strip or ribbon 7, secured at one end to the casing at a point adjacent to the apex of the receptacle and having its other end attached to and adapted to be wound up on a shaft b. The top of the frame or casing is open to permit the bottle to be elevated freely and to project above the frame or casing when it is raised for decanting its contents, and the top of the frame or casing extends only a short distance above the bottle or receptacle when the latter is in its lowermost position. The flexible strip or ribbon, which extends longitudinally of the bottom of the receptacle, is adapted to lift the same when the shaft is rotated, and the said receptacle may be swung upward to the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the accompanyingdrawings.
The shaft 8, which is journaled in suitable bearings of the frame or casing, extends through the front wall of the same and is provided with an eXteriorly-arranged head or knob 9, by means of which the shaft is retated. The periphery of the knob is designed to be milled; but in cases where the receptacle contains poisonous liquids the knob is preferably provided with pronounced teeth, so that the character of the contents of the bottle will be readily indicated by the touch, thereby preventing a poisonous liquid from being obtained by mistake. The receptacle is locked at any desired adjustment by means of a resilient catch 11, arranged to engage a series of ratchet-teeth 11, constituting a ratchet-wheel, but preferably form ed integral with the knob and arranged on the rear face thereof, although a separate ratchet-wheel may be provided, if desired. The resilient catch, which is preferably vertical, is secured at its upper end to the frame or casing and is provided at its lower end with an enlargement or head 13, arranged to engage a bell 14:. Then the knob is rotated for adjusting the bottle or receptacle, the resilient catch is vibrated and caused to sound an alarm. This construction is especially designed for bottles or receptacles containing poisonous or other dangerous substances, and the bell may be omitted, if desired. By forcing the lower end of the resilient catch outward the knob will be freed and the bottle by its own weight will return to its normal position.
The front face of the frame or casing is provided with a vertical slot or opening, 12, arranged opposite the enlarged end of the receptacle to enable a person to tell at a glance how much the receptacle contains.
The invention has the following advantages: The bottle, while being adapted to fill the place of an ordinary one, is particularly de signed for druggists and the like, as it economizes shelf-space and is adapted to be arranged in contact with another bottle and may have its contents decanted without liftin g it off a shelf or other supporting-surface. The bottle will also enable its contents to be accurately drawn off in small quantities for prescription or other purposes from the surface of the liquid without disturbing any sediment. The knob or handle of the shaft may be constructed so as to indicate by the touch the character of the contents of the bottle in order to prevent a poisonous substance from being withdrawn by mistake, and the alarm will be automatically sounded as the bottle or receptacle is moved upward. The bottle is adapted to contain all character of liquids, and the particular shape and arrangement of the bottom of the receptacle will cause the entire contents to drain off.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, such as varying the manner of journaling the receptacle, changing the form of the frame or casing, or altering the operating mechanism.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casing, a receptacle journaled within the same and provided with a horizontal neck located at one end of the receptacle, forming a journal for the same and extending outward through the frame or casing, and means for raising and lowering the body of the receptacle, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casing, a triangular receptacle arranged within the casing and provided at the reduced end or apex with a horizontal neck extending through the casing or frame and journaling the receptacle thereon, the bottom of the receptacle when in substantially ahorizontal position having a slight slope or inclination toward the mouth or neck, and means for raising the enlarged end of the receptacle, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casing, a tapering receptacle arranged therein and provided at its apex with a neck or spout constituting a journal, said receptacle being provided adjacent to the spout with a curved portion disposed transversely of the bottle and forming ,a gutter, and means for elevating the enlarged end of the receptacle, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a receptacle journaled in suitable bearings and provided with a mouth or spout, a ribbon or strip supporting the receptacle, and a shaft connected with the rib bon or strip and adapted to Wind the same around it, whereby the receptacle is lifted to discharge its contents, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a receptacle joun naled in the casing and provided with a mouth or spout, a shaft journaled in suitable bearings at one end of the receptacle, and a flexible strip or ribbon fixed to the casing at the other end of the receptacle, extending longitudinally of the latter and connected with the shaft, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a receptacle journaled in the casing and provided with a neck, a flexible strip supporting the receptacle, a shaft connected with the flexible strip and adapted to wind the same around it, a knob fixed to the shaft, and a pawl and ratchet for locking the shaft against rotation to support the receptacle at any desired adjustment, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a movable receptacle mounted therein and provided With a mouth, a shaft connected with the receptacle and adapted to cause the same to discharge its contents, and an eXteriorly -arranged knob fixed to the shaft and provided with projections or teeth adapted to indicate the character of the contents of the receptacle, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casing, a receptacle, operating mechanism for raising and lowering the same, a ratchet-Wheel carried by the operating mechanism, a vibrating catch engaging the ratchet-teeth and adapted to lock the operating mechanism at any adjustment, and a bell arranged adjacent to the catch and adapted to be struck by the same, whereby an alarm will be sounded when the receptacle is raised, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casing,a receptacle, operating mechanism, a knob connected with the operating mechanism and provided with ratchet-teeth, a bell, and a resilient catch fixed at one end and arranged to engage the ratchet-teeth, said catch being adapted to be vibrated by the ratchet-teeth when the bottle is raised, whereby it is caused to strike the bell, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casing, a receptacle j on rnaled therein and having a neck forming one of the journals, operating mechanism, a hinged cap arranged to cover the mouth of the neck, and a rock-shaft journaled on the frame or casing and connected with the cap and adapted to cover and uncover the neck, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casin g, a receptacle journaled therein, a hinged cover arranged to cover the mouth of the receptacle and provided with an arm, and a rock-shaft journaled in suitable bearings and provided with a forked or bifurcated arm receiving the arm of the cover, whereby when the rock-shaft is rotated, the cover will be swung on its pivot, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame or casin g, a receptacle mounted therein, a hinged cover covering the mouth of the receptacle, provided with a stem and having an arm extending inward and ar ranged at an angle to the stem, and a rockshaft journaled on the frame or casing in rear of the cover and provided with a handle and having a forked or bifurcated arm receiving the arm of the cover, whereby the rock-shaft is adapted to swing the said cover on its pivot, substantially as described.
