I i V r0 ALL WHGM. IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. KELLER, of Green castle, in the co unty of Franklin, and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wheat Drills; andl do hereby declare that the following is a full and-exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in a new arrangement of the spring and lever for operating the iie'rible boot and I plough of a seed planter, and especially in placing the fulcrum of such lever between the boot andthe spring,
thus modifying the action of the lever as heretofore used. In the accompanying drawings- Fig'ure 1 is a longitudinal section of a wheat drill with my'improvements attached. Figure 2 is a'detached view of the lever, boot, and spring, with their connections, showing also the movements as the boot ,is extended.
The general construction of my machine may beiof the usual form, with the: boot attached to the frameO by means of the drag-bar E, as seen in fig. of the accompanying drawings. 7 The check link G is also used as in my patent of September 26, 1865, The lever E, fig. 1, is pivoted atf, and also to the link G. Upon the;
forward end of this lever is a vibrating cap'or seat, I, for holding theirubber spring L, fig. 1. The upper end of this spring is held by another cap, S, which is slipped "loosely upon a stud or short pin cast solid with the staple K, or upon a guide-pin hereafter described. Upon this stud may be put one or more washers, W, when necessary to increase the tension of the spring; or a-th'umb screw, may be arranged, as seen in fig. where the spring L is placed upon the guide-pinP, which is cast solid with the spring-seat This li llllllllbSGlGW T bears upon the top of the washer S, and thus compresses the spring more or less, increasing its tension at leasure. The thumb-screw works i-na'female screw-cut in the staple K, and the thumb-screw, washer S, and spring L, all may slide freely upon the guide-pin P.- 7 Instead of the above arrangement other equivaient'means may be employed to give tension to the spring. Two or more set-screwsmay be inserted in the staple around the guide-pin P, or other means for the same purpose. The action of the spring Lholds the lever F and link G steady, and also under slight strain, ready to resist the greater strain of the/boot and shovel, and thus prevents the shaking motion to which the common arrangement of lever is liable.
Claims.
1. In the arrangement of a flexible bootor shovel-plough with a lever and spring, I 'claim placing the fulcrum of the lever between the,boot and the spring, substantially in the manner, and for the puiiposes set forth.
2. 'I claimthe vibrating seat I, for supporting the spring in combination with the lever,s ubstantially as set forth. I p i 3. I also claim the use of the washer W, or its equivalent, in combination with the-cap S, and spring L, substantially as described. 7 I
4:. I claim the above-described arrangement of the thumb-screw hand guide-pin P, for compressing the spring, and thus increasing the tension of the same, substantially as specified.
