COMBINED TOBACCO CUTTER AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,212, dated November 29, 1898.
Application filed. June 4, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL V. CRoWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Tobacco Cutter and Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to combined tobacco cutters and advertising devices, and has for its object to provide a device that will out tobacco as well as advertise the brand of tobacco being out.
Another object of the device is to provide a device which in its general design, construe tion, and operation will offer inducements to the purchaser of tobacco.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. I Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line e e of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the quadrant and shifting lever. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the knife and knife-head.
,Similar letters and figures refer to corresponding parts in all the views.
The frame of the device is composed of one piece A. Theknife 22 is slipped into the slot 42 of the knife-head 18 and is secured therein by the bolts 23. The knife-head is also slotfed at 20 to give the pin 19 plenty of play as the knife-lever 21 moves upwardly or downwardly. The lever 21 is pivotally connected at 15 to the frame A. The base of the frame A is slotted at 41, through which the knife 22 may be passed when disconnected from the knife-head for resharpening.
The upper half of the frame A is slotted longitudinally and of sufficient depth to contain therein the mechanism used to operate the symbols, to which I will again refer.
The peculiar construction of the mechanism used to advertise the tobacco is as follows: A shaft 10 is supported by the frame A, the said shaft having permanently connected thereon a gear 25. The shaft 10 is threaded at 10 for the reception of a nut, thereby providing means to secure thereon any symbol or design desired. Motion is communicated to the shaft 10 and symbol 24. by the quadfierial No. 639,408. (No model.)
rant 26, engaging the pinion or gear 25. The quadrant 26 is provided with teeth 40. The said quadrant receives its motion through the medium of the shifting lever 39, the spring 35, the pawl 37, the spring 29, and the connectin g-rod 16, the said connecting-rod being pivotally connected at 17 to the knife-lever 21 and at 32 to the shifting lever 39. The quadrant 26 is secured permanently to the shaft 12. The shifting lever 39 is pivotally connected to said shaft and also to the end 32 of the connecting-rod 16. The ratchet-wheel 38 has, like the quadrant 26, a permanent connection to the shaft 12, the said quadrant bein g located near one end of the said shaft and the ratchet-wheel 38 near the other. The
r shifting lever 39 has a pivotal connection to the said shaft and the said connection being, preferably, between the ratchet-wheel 38 and the quadrant 26. The shaft 12 is supported in position by the frame A. The ratchetwheel 38 acts in conjunction with the pawl 37 and shifting lever 39. The pawl is loosely pivoted to the said lever 39, the said pawl be ing adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel 38 and the release-pin 28. A spring 35 is provided to maintain a constant engagement between the ratchet-wheel 38 and pawl 37. The spring 35 is made more effective by the pin 33.
To communicate motion to the shaft 10 and thereby turn the star or symbol 24, the knifelever 21 is lifted upwardly and to a height which will permit the pawl 37 to engage the ratchet-wheel 38. When engaged, it is then lowered, while in the said motion the extended part 27 of the pawl 37 comes into contact with the release-pin 28, the said pin having a permanent connection to the frame A. As the lever 21 moves downwardly the pawl 37 is gradually disengaged from the ratchetwheel 38, the said disengagement being due to the contact between the extended part 27 of the pawl 37 and the release-pin 28. The tendency of the pawl 37 would be, if not hindered by the pin 28, to follow the ratchetwheel as it turns. The ratchet-wheel 38 being disengaged from the pawl 37, the said wheel 38 and quadrant 26 being permanently connected to the shaft 12 are forced to return to the position they occupied before the shifting lever 39 began to move downward, as
shown in Fig. 2.
The quadrant is forced to move upward with a great deal of force imparted by the spring 29 to the said quadrant. The spring 29 engages the quadrant 26, as follows: The said quadrant has a lip or projection 30, which is overlapped by one end of the spring 29. The said spring is pivotally connected to the pin 14, which in turn is permanently attached to the frame A. To make the spring 29 effective and to prevent it from moving off of the lip 30, a pin 13 is provided, as shown in Fig. 2. Vhen the quadrant 26 moves downwardly, the lip 30 exerts an upward pressure on the spring 29 until the ratchet-wheel 38 is disengaged. Vhen the said disengagement takes place, the spring 29 prompts the quadrant 26 to return to the position as shown in Fig. 2. The quadrant as it returns to the said position engages the gear or pinion 25, thereby transmitting motion to the said gear and causing the said gear as well as symbol 24 to turn.
Now I desire to state the object of having the symbol 24: acting in conjunction with the lever 21. As I have already stated, the object of my invention is to advertise the tobacco as well as cut it. The symbol or star 24 having been put in motion, if the said star 2% stops turning with any one of the points it directly in line with the center of the star 11 it indicates that the purchaser of the tobacco shall receive free of charge a quantity of tobacco equal to the amount of his purchase.
The stars or symbol 24 and 11 may be removed and other forms or designs may be placed in their positions, the design being used depending mainly on the name of the brand of l l l tobacco being cut-for instance, the Star, Battle-Axe, &c.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tobacco cutting and advertising device, the combination of a shaft, the symbol thereon, the pinion also on said shaft, the quadrant having teeth engaging said pinion, the ratchet- Wheel, the pawl engaging the same, the pivoted knife-lever, the shifting lever carrying said pawl, the release-pin with which the end of said pawl engages, the projeotion on the pawl, the spring acting thereon, and the bar connecting the knife-lever with the shifting lever, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a combined tobacco cutter and advertising device, the combination of the main shaft, a ratchet-wheel and quadrant thereon, a pivoted knife-lever, a loosely-pivoted shifting lever on said main shaft, a pawl pivoted on the shifting lever to engage said ratchetwheel, the release-pin with which the end of the pawl engages, a pin on a fixed part of the device, a spring pivotally connected therewith to engage the quadrant, a gear mounted to engage the quadrant, a symbol on the shaft of the gear, and a rod pivotally connecting the shifting lever and the knife-lever, whereby the movement of the knife-lever actuates the said symbol, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
