SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,159, dated November 29, 1898. Application led Julie 30, 1897. Serial. NO. 642,937. (N0 model.)

Be it known that I, ALBERT G. GOWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Ealing-Press, of which the following is aspeciication.
My invention relates to baling-presses, and particularly to that class wherein the plunger-beam is actuated by cam-pressure, the cam receiving its motion from a sweep operated by horse-power or its equivalent; and the object in View is to provide coperating main and auxiliary cam-faces adapted for successive application of pressure to the plunger-beam, whereby the maximum speed of movement is communicated to the plunger-beam during the first operation of the stroke and whereby the speed is decreased and the power proportionately increased as the plunger approaches the limit of its movement.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a baling-press constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the operating mechanism, showing in full lines the positions which the parts occupy during the first or preparatory portion of a stroke and in dotted lines the positions which the parts occupy during the succeeding portion of the stroke when the speed of movement is secondary to the power.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
l designates a base,l upon one end of which is arranged a baling-c'hamber 2, and 3 represents a plunger operating in the baling-chamber and having a plunger-beam 4. The plunger-beam operates between upper and lower parallel guide-plates 5 and G and also between axially-vertical guide-rolls 7, and to the beam is attached a rebounding spring S, which, however, may be omitted when it is desired to depend upon the elasticity of the material baled to return the plunger to its initial position. The sweep 9 is attached to a cam-head lO, fulcrumed at ll upon the base and adapted to bear at its face against a terminal contactpoint consisting in the construction illuss trated of an antifriction-roll 12, mounted on the end of the plunger-beam. In connection with this main cam, however, I also preferably employ an auxiliary cam 13, which is arranged on the sweep 9 in advance of the initial portion of the curve of the main cam and is at a still more abrupt curve than the same to coperate with a bearing-point consisting of an antifriction-roller I4, located on the plunger-beam in advance of the bearingpoint l2 and in a different horizontal plane therefrom. The object in arranging the bearing-point 14 and the auxiliary cam 13 in a different plane from the bearing-point 12 and the cam l0 is to enable the auxiliary cam to actuate the plunger-beam initially and then transfer the operation to the main cam by bringing the face of the main cam into contact with the main bearing-point 12 before the auxiliary cam releases the auxiliary bearing-point 14. This produces a continuous operation and avoids jar and at the same time gives a rapid initial motion to the plunger during that portion of the stroke when the material being baled is loose. The rapidity of motion imparted by the main-cam face to the plunger-beam gradually decreases from the initial point toward the terminal point.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. In a baling-press, a plunger-operating mechanism including a rebounding plungerbeam, a main cam having a face for coperation with a main bearing-point on the plunger-beam, and an auxiliary cam arranged in advance of the initial point of the main cam for cooperation with an auxiliary bearingpoint on the plunger-beam in a different plane from the main bearing-point, the face of the auxiliary cam receding from the fulcrum- IOO 1o tively with said main and auxiliary bearingpoints, the auxiliary cam being!l arranged in advance of the initial point of the main cam, substantially as specified.
