UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
ABRAHAM RASNER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW FRAME AND SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,047, dated November 29, 1898.
Application filed January 21, 1898. Serial No. 667.385. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM RASNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Frames and Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 indicates a vertical transverse section through line m w of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is atransverse sectional plan View on line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective view of frame, showing individual parts separately.
Fig. 5 is the same of side piece of sash. Fig.
0 is a perspective view of modified form of top piece of sash. Fig. 7 is a sectional perspective view of modified form of side rail of sash.
My invention relates to improvements in window frames and sashes, my object being to produce a light and rigid metallic frame and sash in which the guide-strip of the frame is integral with the frame and a groove formed in the edge of the sash for the reception of outwardly-projecting ribs of said guide-strip and it consists in other novel features of construction hereinafter more specifically set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts Wherever they occur.
Referring now to said drawings, a and a are the sides of the frame.
I) and c are the top and bottom, respectively,of the frame, which are riveted or otherwise suitably secured together at their conjoined ends.
The sides of the frame comprise four independent parts, the rear part a side pieces a a and the guide-strip a, the lower portion of said guide-strip being detachably secured in said side pieces to admit of easy access to the counterweights cl cl, suspended therein, or for any other purpose. The rear portion a is formed of a vertical sheet, the ends of which terminate in U-shaped flanges e e for the reception of the inner ends, respectively, of the side pieces a and a The side pieces a a are also provided with U- shaped flanges ff for the reception of the inwardlyprojecting portion g of the guide-strip a Said guide-strip a is provided with two outwardly-extending projections or ribs g g, adapted to project into grooves "L 2', formed in the inner faces of the top and bottom sashes, respectively, whereby a dust and weather proof connection is made between the sashes j and frame. The said sashes j are formed of side pieces, as shown in the drawings, formed of two pieces or sections it and Z, section is having inwardly-projecting grooves i for the reception of the guide-stri p, as hereinbefore stated and for the purpose hereinbefore stated, and top and bottom pieces In and Z, respectively, which are riveted or otherwise suitably secured at their conjoined ends, as shown in Fig. 2. The inwardly-projecting ends of said section 7c are secured in U- shaped flanges formed in the inner ends of section I. Said section Z may be of any conformation, and is provided with a shoulder m, in which the glass may be secured by putty or other suitable means, or said section lmay be preferably formed with a groove 12, in which the glass may be inserted and secured therein with putty or other suitable means.
A partition-strip c, secured to the section a, serves to form independent compartments for the reception of the counter-weights d d, which may be secured to chains or ropes which pass over a pulley 19, arranged in the top of the frame, for the purpose of counterbalancing the sash.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a metallic frame and sash, substantially as set forth, the combination of a frame, the sides of which are formed of four independent parts, a a a and a, the said part a comprising a metal strip, substantially, I-shaped in transverse section, the outwardly-projecting ribs of which form guidingstrips, and a sash in the sides of which longitudinal channels or grooves are formed, in which the guiding-strips of the frame are adapted to project.
2. In a metallic frame and sash, substantially as set forth, the combination of a frame,
, the sides of which are formed of four indeprojecting ribs of which form guide-strips, the lower section of the same being detachably secured to the parts a a for the purpose of enabling access to be had to the weights and for removing the sash.
In testimony that I, ABRAHAM RASNER, claim the foregoing I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABRAHAM RASNER. [L. s]
