ACETYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST DAUBER, a sub-- ject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Bochuin, in the Province of VVestphalizaKingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Producing Acetylene Gas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improved apparatus for producing acetylene gas wherein the gas is liberated in the interior of agas-holder consisting of a bell movable up and down in a fixed tank and'shell after the manner of an ordinary gasometer.
The said invention consists chiefly in certain improvements for delivering the carbid to the interior of the apparatus and preventing the gas from being liberated between the bell and the tank.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a verticalsection along line I I of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section along line II II of'Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a verticalseotion along the broken line III III of Fig. 2.
The gas-holder consists, as is usual in such apparatus, of a fixed tank A, open at the top, and a bell or movable top B adapted to move up and down in suitable guides provided for the purpose in the tank A. A water-pipe 0, provided at its upper end with a float G, regulates the admission of water to the tank A and keeps it at a uniform level, and a discharge-pipe D allows the escape of the gas.
The feeding apparatus for admitting raw material into the interior of the tank is as follows: A tube E of large diameter is attached to the top of the bell B and passes vertically down through the same. at the bottom, except for the side opening L,

The lower part of the tube E is guided in a fixed tube M, standing on an oblique plate N, carried bya girder O and angle-iron 0 at the bottom of the tank A. Guide-rings Q. Q are interposed'between the said tubes E and M, so that the tube E may move up and down in tube M without irregularity of motion, although the latter tube is of too great diametor for the tubes to fit together Without such interposed parts. The lower edge of ring Q coincides with the beginning of the spout P, and thus marks the point at which the discharge from the interior of pipe E takes place About half-way between the top and bottom of the tank A a funnelshaped spout P is attached to the tube M, forming a side outlet, so that when the bell B, with the tube E, has sunk so deeply into the tank that the side opening L in the tube E arrives at the upper edge P of the funnel P and below, the raw material on the helix K will pass down into and through the opening L and the funnel. The mouth of the funnel P is provided with a flap-valve R, mounted on a pivot R, attached to the exterior of said funnel. When this screw is turned in one direction, the said rods are forced down. IVhen it is turned in the other, they are drawn up. The former movement tends to open the valve R. Thelatter movement tends to close the same, irrespective in both instances of any motion of the said bell. .The valve may thus be set more or less open before the bell begins to descend or may be left closed, and the subsequent action of the bell in descending far enough to uncover the opening L will open the valve to a greater or less degree, depending on the above adjustment. Also, the screw U may be operated while the bell descends to counteract in greater or less degree the effect of the latter, thus regulating the extent of opening.
The tunnel P discharges its contents into a small tank V, placed upon the oblique plate N and reaching up to the water-level in the tank A. This prevents the scattering of the raw material over the whole area of the bottom of the tank and the formation of gas near the sides, where it could escape between the tank A and bell B. The lower front edge of the small tank V has an opening V, through which the etfete material may gain access to the outlet-cock \V in the tank A.
Any gases formed in the tube E will pass out through the perforated pipe J, which connects with a pipe X outside of the hopper G, said pipe X connecting directly with the gasholder.
I am aware that gas-producers of a similar general design have been in use before this invention, and I therefore do not claim such an apparatus broadly; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gas-producer the combination of a tank A, a bell B adapted to work up and down in said tank, a filling-tube E passing through the top of said bell, a feeding-hopper F fixed in the top of said filling-tube, a perforated pipe J in the center of said fillingtube, and a helix K surrounding said pipe J between the latter and the tube E and lead ing down to a side opening at the bottom of the tube E substantially as set forth.
2. In a gas-producer the combination of a tank A, a smaller tank V inside of said tank A, an inclined plate N on which said tank V rests, a fixed tube M standing upon said plate behind the tank V, a funnel P attached to said tube M at a certain height, and a fillingtube E provided near its closed lower end with a side opening L surrounded and guided by an interposed ring in the upper part of said tube M, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the bell B and a tube for supplying carbid, the tank A, an inclined plate N fixed in the lower part thereof, an inner tank V supported on this plate in position to receive the discharge from the said tube and provided with an opening V at the bottom in the outer side and an outlet from the main tank opposite this opening substantially as set forth.
