BAKE-OVEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 614,898, dated November Q9, 1899; Application filed October 26, 1897. Serial No. 656,452. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMANA. SCHOREGGE, residing at WVakefield, in the county of Dixon and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Bake-Ovens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel improvement in bake-ovens.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and novel bake-oven which shall be simple of construction .and operation and embody the following advantages and instrumentalities, to wit: a revolving shelf-frame provided with adjustable weights which are incased in a housing provided with solid walls; heating-pipes having end caps, so that said pipes may be readily cleaned; hollow shelves pivotally depending from said shelf-frame; a sliding door which can be opened to permit the least escape of heat; a simple locking mechanism, so that the revolving shelf-frame may be locked at any point, and an interchangeable driving mechanism, so that the shelf-frame may be revolved by spring-motor or other motive power.
The oven is compact and portable, so that it can be readily removed in sections to be replaced, as will be described more fully here- .inafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an enlarged front elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional front view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. i is a plan view of the improvement with the cover of the baking-chamber removed and with parts in section. Fig. 5 is a-perspective view of one of the supporting-pans for the bread, while Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement, showing a modified form of driving-gear.
My invention comprises, essentially, a housing which is preferably provided with a flat bottom and four square sides and an arched dome A, as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, forming a heating or baking chamber.
These bottom and side sections, as well as the dome or top section, are made separate and of two parts, the spaces between which are filled with asbestos or any other suitable nonheat-conducting material. Each section is provided with a flange or extension M, bolted thereto, the flange extending beyond the packing contained between the double walls. These flanges are so situated that when the sections are assembled in place the sections may be secured together by means of bolts passing through the flanges M.
Within the bottom and upon one side of the chamber I provide a furnace B, havinga door B, through which the fuel is fed, a grate B being positioned at aproperpoint,as shown in the drawings. The products of combustion pass from the furnace proper into a series of transversely-positioned and horizontallyheld heat-conducting pipes O, which are provided with end caps 0 so that they may be readily cleaned, these pipes being closed except at a point, as C, from whence the products of combustion are conductedinto a suitable groove. These heat-conducting pipes are disposed within the lower portion of the furnace.
Extending through the upper portion of the baking-chamber is ashaft E, supported with in suitable bearings, having the extending arms forming a shelf-frame E there being preferably four such arms, which radiate from the shaft E and which at their ends revolubly hold the hangers F, forming part of the bake-pans F, which pans are in the form of hanging shelves constructed of a top and lower plate F F separated from each other by the bars F to which bars the plates are secured, preferably, by rivets F thus forming an air-space between the plates. The point of suspension is far enough from the supportingaxle E so that the shelves will freely swing to be retained in a horizontal position in being carried around by the shaft E.
To facilitate the inspection of the wares upon the shelves, the peep-holes D are provided, which are covered with mica, glass, or other suitable slides to allow of a ready inspection of the process of baking.
The dome of the oven is provided with a counterbalanced sliding door A in front of which the shelves pass, so that they can be readily loaded or unloaded. The sliding door permits a large or small opening, as desired.
The device used to drive the shaft E consists of a pinion E, which is in mesh with the gear-wheel G of a spring-motor G of any improved construction. By means of this motor G the hanging pans are revolved at any suitable speed. Now if at any time it should be desired to use but one or two of the shelves, or if the shelves should be unequally loaded, so that the heavier shelves would have a natural tendency to carry the lighter ones upward, I provide a counterbalancing mechanism embodying the rods I, secured to form a part of the shaft E, and upon which rods are adj ustably held a series of weights 1 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. By this means the shelf-frame can be nicely counterbalanced with any sort of a weight, so that the motor will have a tendency to run evenly.
In order to regulate the speed of the shelfframe, I provide a governor H, havinga pinion I-l in mesh with the gear-wheel E secured to the shaft E, so that when the latter is rotated a retarded motion is transmitted to the pinion H and shaft H carrying said pinion. On this shaft H is secured a bevel gear-wheel H in mesh with the bevel-pinion 11 secured on the lower end of the governorstem H provided at its upper end with the governor-arms H The shelf-frame can be locked at any point by means of a pin I, workin g into a bracket 1*, and this pin coming in the path of the bars I will act as a stop for the shelf-frame.
In order that the speed mechanism may be interchangeable, so that electric, water, or steam power may be used, I provide a motorshaft L, provided with a fast and loose pulley L and upon this shaft is secured a pinion L, meshing with a pinion E secured to the shaft E. 3y this means the shaft E may be thrown out of mesh with the motor if any other suitable power is desired to drive the shelf-frame.
It is quite essential that the pans shall continuously revolve, and as the motor is driven by a spring and so will run down at the end of a certain time I provide an alarm mechanism, which comprises a follower J, adapted to rest against the outermost coil of the spring G of the motor G. This follower is secured to a rod J, fitted to slide longitudinally, and is normally pressed against the outer coil of the spring G by means of a spring J The outer end of the rod J is further pivotally connected with a lever J as is shown in Fig. 4E, fulcrumed on a bracket J and connected by a link J 5 to the striker J 6 of the gong J Now as the spring unwinds and is nearly run down the uncoiling of the spring causes an outward movement of the follower and its connected rod 5, so that the lever J receives a movement to actuate the link J 2 to direct the striker J 6 to ring the gong J to give the alarm and notice that the motor needsrewinding.
At a suitable point I provide the heatingchamberwith an ordinary pyrometer K, having a suitable dial and pointer, as is usual.
Now, having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. In abake oven, the combination with the rotary shaft, of the shelf-frame carried thereby consisting of the arms having the bake pans suspended at their ends, the counterbalance device mounted on the shaft,whereby the shelf-frame may be counterbalanced, and mechanism for driving the shaft; substantially as described.
2. In a bake-oven, the combination with the reel-shaft, the radial arms on the shaft, the bake-pans suspended on the arms, the radial arms mounted on the end of the shaft outside of the oven, and weights adjustably carried on said arms, and mechanism for driving the reel-shaft; substantially as described.
