-R. L. HOWELL, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, 'ASSIGNO'R T0 HIMSELF, n. M.
WILKINS, AND W. s. BROWNING, or SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 61,432. clated January 22. 1857.
BURNER FOR VAPOR STOVES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known .that I, R; L. HOWELL, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved Vapor Stove; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in providing a retort, with valves, in connection with conducting pipes and chamber,
and arranging them in such a manner for the burning of hydrocarbon oils that I am able to control the flow of oil and the flame, and at the same time obviate many of the objections which have hitherto been met with in stoves of this description. i i v Figure 1 is a vertical section of the apparatus nearly complete.
Figure 2 is a vertical section ofthe retort.
Similar-letters of reference indicate like parts.
The oil is contained in a reservoir not shown in the drawing. It descends from the reservoir through the pipe A into the chamber N N. B is a pipe which conducts the oil from the chamber-N N into the valve pipe D D.
The pipe B is screwed into the chamber N N, so that its top end nearly reaches the top of the chamber, thus I leaving a large space in the chamber for the deposition of sediment. This allows the oil to run down. through the pipe B clear, and without containing matter which would be likelyto clog the valves and packing. is a valve-rod, which screws into the T-piece 0 0. is a cap or stuffing-box, which prevents leakage around the valve-rod. .The valve is opened and closed by turning it in the screw seen in the drawing, by the handle Q."
The valve is at the extreme end of the rod, and the valve-seat is at I, inside the retort. F'is the retort. E is a screw-plug (with a bolt head) which screws into the retort. K is a partition in the retort, with an aperture or vent hole, J, through it, and from the top of which the gas escapeswhich is consumed. From the top of the screw E (and attached to it) there is a conical-headed pin. H, which is slightly smaller than the aperture or vent hole J. This pin is raised .and lowered as the screw-plug is screwed in or out,'and the conical head is for the purpose of dividing and spreading the flame and to prevent the hissing ot' the vapor as it escapes from the retort. By removing the screw-plug E, access is had to the interior of the retort for the removal of any residuum and non-vaporizable matter which may have accumulated therein. S is packing placed in the pipe D around the valve-rod G, for the purpose of regulatingthe supply of oil to the retort. The rod C is removable by taking off the stufiing-box P and unscrewing it from the T-joint 0. L L are stands or conductors attached to the retort F, (cast with it,) for the purpose of supporting the plate m, and for the purpose of conducting the heat from the flame to the oil in the retort.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The residuum-chamber N N, and the pipe B, arranged substantially as described, in combination with a vapor stove.
2. The conical-headed pin H within the aperture J of the retort, operated by the screw-plug E, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 1 v
3. The retort F, having stands Land partition K cast solid .therewith, the latter having vent J extending through it and valve-seat I on its side, as and for the purpose specified. I
RL L. HOWELL.
