To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, PAUL CORNELIUS, a subject of the Gerlnan Emperor, residing at Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Smoke Consuming Furnaces, as set forth in the following specification.
I provide the furnace for a steam-boiler or for other purposes with an arrangement comprising heating-pipes laid in the smoke-chamber, flues and channels leading to the chin1 ney, a blower or compressor for sucking in the heated air and delivering it under a pressure to the lire, means for actuating said b lower or compressor, a device for injecting liquid or gaseous fuel or superheated steam into the compressed and heated air, and a series of hollow and perforated pipes or boxes or channels replacing the common re-bars either wholly or partly.
The objects of my invention are, first, to enable the mixture of heated air and liquid or gaseous fuel or superheated steam to penetrate even a high layer of burning and glowing coals intermixed with slag-cinders; second, to increase the temperature of the fire, and thus to promote the combustion of the coal; third, to consume the smoke and attain a complete consumption of the coal, and, fourth, to utilize even low-grade coal.
The arrangement is shown on the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a ground plan of a steam-boiler plant assumed to be provided with the new arrangement; Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section of same, taken on the line y e in Fig. l; Fig. 3, a cross-section of a fire-grate assumedl to consist entirely in perforated pipes; Fig. 4, a cross-section of a fire-grate assumed to consist entirely in perforated boxes or channels; Fig. 5, a cross-section of a fire-grate assumed to consist partly in common fire-bars and partly in perforated pipes; Fig. 6, a vertical longitudinal section of a fire-grate, showing a perforated pipe in its elevation; Fig. 7, a ground plan of a fire-grate, of which Fig. 5 is a cross-section on an enlarged scale; Fig. 8, a view of the end of a perforated box or channel; and Fig. 9 is a cross-section of such a chamber provided with a rib d.

Near the steam-boiler A is the inlet I for fresh air tothe heating-piping K, which leads the air rst through the fume-channel B, between the steam-boiler and the chimneyD, then through the one side Hue L, the smokechamber M, and the other side flue L of the steam-boiler to the blower G. On the way through the whole course of the piping K the air will become heated, so that it arrives with a very high temperature at the blower G.
H denotes some suitable injecting device of any known construction for introducing a regulated quantity of liquid or gaseous fuel or superheated steam into the hot air. In case liquid fuel is introduced the injecting vdevice is so arranged that it will divide the liquid fuel finely and distribute it evenly in the air-supply. After the mixture ofhot air and fuel or superheated steam has entered the blower G it will be discharged by the latter .under a certain pressure in-to lthe main pipe O and the side branches N, leading to the chambers P of the ire-grates Q Q. Here the mixture is distributed into the perforated -pipes a. of Fig. 3, or the perforated boxes or channels b of Fig. 4, or the perforated pipes a c of Figs. 5 to 7, as the case may be, land from there pressed out through the holes o in streams through the lire, as indicated approximately by the dotted lines in Figs. 3 to 5. Owing to the high temperature and highlyinflammable character of the mixture, it will be ignited immediately and increase the heat of the fire. Owing to its pressure it will be able to force, its Way through the layer of burning and glowing coals, and thereby prevent the coals and slag-cinders from jamming and cooling down. For the same reason the mixture will also assist in utilizing low-grade coals by keeping the temperature high and penetrating the coals everywhere.
As already mentioned above, the fire-grates Q Q may be constructed in either of the man 95 IOO other means, or they may be made in one piece for the whole length. Their closed back ends may be fitted into suitable holes of the angle-piece m, or they maybe supported in some other manner.

The blower G is assumed to be driven from a steam-engine E by means of a counter-shaft F. It may, however, be driven from an electromotor, a shafting, or otherwise. It may also be replaced by a compressor, so as to attain a higher pressure of the mixture on entering the res.
The injecting device H may be arranged for regulating thc quantity of liquid or gaseous liquid or superheated steam at pleasure, and thus attaining a mixture the parts of which are in some suitable proportions to each other.'
The arrangement as described and shown may be applied to any furnance. The superheated steam may be produced in a piping similar to the piping K and conducted in a similar manner from the steam-generator to the injecting device II.
I declare that what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. In a smoke-consuming furnace the combination with an inlet for fresh air, of an airheating piping laid in the fumechannel of chimney and in the tlues of furnace, a blower attached to the end of said heating-piping, an injecting device placed on the junction between said heating-piping and said blower and arranged for introducing liquidy or gaseous fuel or superheated steam, a series of perforated pipes replacing several or all the irebars and distributing the compressed mixture of hot air and fuel orsuperheated steam into the fire, and a piping between said blower and said perforated pipes, substantially as set forth.
2. In a smoke-consu ming furnace, the combination with an inlet for fresh air, of an airheating piping laid in the fume-channel of chimney and in the iiues of furnace, a blower attached to the end of said heating-piping, means for driving said blower, an injecting device placed at the junction between said heating-piping and said blower and arranged for introducing liquid or gaseous fuel or superheated steam, a series of perforated pipes or boxes replacing several or all tire-bars and distributing the compressed mixture of hot air and fuel or superheated steam into the fire, and a piping between said blower and said perforated pipes or boxes, substantially as set forth. l
3. In a smoke-consuming furnace the combinat-ion with an inlet for fresh air, of an airheating piping laid in the fume-channel of chimney and in the dues of furnace, a compresser attached to the end of said heatingpiping, an injecting device placed at the junction between said heating-piping and said compressor' and arranged forintrodueing liquid or gaseous fuel or superheated steam, a series of perforated pipes or boxes replacing several or all the fire-bars and distributing the compressed mixture of hot air and fuel or superheated steam into the lire, anda piping between said compressor and said perforated pipes or boxes, substantially as set forth.
4. In a smoke-consuming furnace the combination with an inlet for fresh air, of an airheating piping laid in the fume-channel of chimney and in the ilues of furnace, a compresser attached to the end of said heatingpiping, means for driving said compressor, an injecting device placed-at the junction between said heating-piping and said compressor and arranged for introducing liquid or gaseous fuel or superheated steam, a series of perforated pipes orboxes replacing several or all the fire-bars and distributing the compressed mixture of hot air and fuel or super@ heated steam into the tire and a i infr be- 7 I) p b tween said compressor and said perforated pipes or boxes, substantially as set forth.
