SECTIONAL DISK HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,292, dated November 1, 1898. Application filed November 22, 1897. Serial No. 659,512. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES H. MORROW and JOSEPH A. SCHMITZ, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Disk Harrows, of Which the 1" ollowing is a description.
The accompanying drawing is a rear elevation of one-half of a disk harrow in partial section and with parts broken away to show the construction.
As implements of the character of our invention are usually manufactured they are provided with a certain definite number of disks, and the construction is such that this fixed number cannot be either increased or diminished without disorganizing the structure and rebuilding it. The result of this common manner of constructing implements of this kind is that they are made of various sizes, usually depending on the number of draft-animals to be employed to propel them. Thus an implement adapted to be propelled by two draft-animals may in both sections have a total of eight or ten disks, while one adapted to be propelled by three, four, or more draft animals may have as many as twelve, fourteen, or even sixteen disks. For this reason many users who are able to bear the additional expense purchase two or more disk harrows of different sizes. This enables them to use the larger and more economical one when the demands are such that enough draft-animals can be spared to propel it and a smaller one when for any reason only two draftanimals are available, thus uninter ruptedly continuing the important work for the harrow whenever the condition of the soil is favorable for its use.
The object of our invention is to obviate the necessity for purchasing more than one implement for the purpose set forth.
To this end it consists, broadly, in providing a disk harrow with a plurality of sections adapted to be easily attached to increase the size to that found most economical or as easily removed when found desirable for any rea son to reduce the implement to a smaller size.
It also consists in combining with such sectional parts a detachable scraper-support and scrapers adapted to be used with such parts.
It also consists in such other novel constructions or combinations of parts as may be shown and described and as are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, A B O C represent one half of the frame of a disk harrow, the other half being a duplicate extending to the right. The two parts usually support a drivers seat, and a tongue or other means for securing the draft-animals is also provided.

F is the support for the scrapers G G and is provided With any suitable means for moving the scrapers to and from the disks.

The preferred means shown consists in constructingthe outer end of the shaft D with a screw-threaded longitudinal extension d and providing sections D, &c., with an internal screw-threaded longitudinal cavity d at one end adapted to cooperate with the extension 01 to secure the two sections together and at the other end with an extension (1 similar to the extension d on the shaft D. The disks E are preferably positioned between the sections and are held in place by the abutting ends thereof. Any desired number of the detachable sections D and disks E may be provided; but we prefer to use from two to four on each half of the implement. A suitable nut D affixed to the outer end of the last section, holds the last disk in suitable position.
It is obvious that in adding the sectional parts described means should be provided for keeping the disks clean. For this purpose we also provide detachable sections F of the scraper-support, each provided with one or more scrapers G, located in proper relation with the disks. The preferable means employed to secure the detachable sections F to the support F are substantially the same as those described in the sectional axle. The end of the support F is provided with an internal screw-threaded cavity f, While each section F has at one end a screw-threaded extension f, adapted to be screwed into the cavity to secure the parts together, and upon the other end with an internal screw-threaded cavity f similar to the cavity f on the support F. It is obvious as many sections may be used as are found necessary. In each case the screw-threads on the several parts are cut in such a manner that the advance of the machine tightens the connections of the several parts. The additional scrapers may be secured to the extension in any preferred manner.
It is obvious that after describing our improvement various immaterial modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention. Hence we do not Wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the exact means set forth to secure the various sections together, the broad idea of our invention consisting, in providing detachable sections to increase or decrease the size and efiectiveness of the implement as set forth.
Having thus described our invention and one way in which it may be carried'into effect, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a device of the kind described, the barrow-frame, the axle and the disks mounted thereon, in combination with detachable axle-sections, the axle and axle-sections being provided on their proximate ends with screw-threaded connections whereby the two may be screwed together to lengthen the axle and adapt it to support additional disks thereon, substantially as described.
2. In a disk harrow the combination with a frame and disk-carrying axle of detachable extensions for the axle and disk clamped to the axle by the extension.
3. In a disk harrow the combination with a frame, of a disk-carrying axle, a detachable disk-carrying extension on the axle and a screw-threaded engagement between the axle and extension.
4. In a disk harrow the combination with a frame, and disk-carrying axle of a detachable extension for the end of the axle comprising detachable sections and rotary disks supported by the extensions.
5. In a device of the kind described, the harrow-frame, the axle, disks mounted thereon, a scraper-support and scrapers mounted thereon and arranged to clean the disks, in combination with detachable axle-sections, disks adapted to be mounted thereon, means for securing the axle-sections to the axle to lengthen the same, detachable scraper-support sections, scrapers adapted to be mounted thereon, and means for securing the support sections to the scraper-support to lengthen the same, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the kind described, the harrow-frame, the axle and-disks mounted thereon, in combination with detachable axlesections, the proximate ends of the axle and the detachable sections being constructed each with one member of an external and internal screw-joint adapted to secure the two together to lengthen the axle and support additional disks, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the kind described, the harrow-frame, the axle, disks mounted thereon, and scrapers arranged to clean the disks, in combination with detachable axle-sections the proximate ends of the axle and the detachable sections being constructed each with one member of an external and internal screw-joint adapted to secure the two together to lengthen the axle, and support additional disks, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the kind described, the harrow-frame, the axle, disks mounted thereon, a scraper-support, and scrapers mounted thereon and arranged to clean the disks, in combination with detachable axle-sections, the proximate ends of the axle and detachable sections being constructed each with one member of an external and internal screwjoint adapted to secure the two together to lengthen the axle and support additional disks, and the proximate ends of the scrapersupport and the scraper-sections also being constructed each with one member of an external and internal screw-joint adapted to secure the two together to lengthen the support, and support additional scrapers, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the kind described, the harrow-frame, the axle, constructed at its outer end to attach to a detachable axle-section, disks mounted thereon, and detachable axle-sections constructed at their ends to attach to one another and to the axle to lengthen the same and support additional disks, in combination with the scraper-support constructed at its outer end to attach to a detachable support-section, scrapers mounted thereon arranged to clean the disks, and detachable support-sections constructed at their ends to attach to one another and to the support to lengthen the same and support additional scrapers, substantially as described.
