SIECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 612,718, dated October 18, 1898. Application filed December 10, 1897. Serial No. 661,380. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: p

Beit known that I, JOHN FRANCIS FINAN, residing at Lonaconing, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Clothes, Hat, and Display Racks, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description. v

My invention is an improvement in racks designed to hold articles of Clothing and other articles which it may be desired to hang up or display and the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

By my invention I seek to provide a simple construction of rack in which thearms for supporting the garments are Carried by slides, which latter operate in an upright post of a special construction, the slides being so arranged and engaged that one, two, or all of the slides may be raised at one operation and the arms being so arranged relatively to the slides and Cooperating parts that the slides may be set to hold the arms at half-mast, and l by preference the slides may be divided transversely into sections, so one or more arms may be adjusted to position for use independently of the others.

in four upright sections A, which are spaced apart to form between their inner corners an opening in which the slides move up and down, and these sections A are spaced apart at their adjacent edges forming recesses which receive the arms in the folded position of the rack. At their lower ends the sections A are connected with the base B, whose crossed portions may be ornamented by any suitable design, and are supplied with casters so the rack :may be turned or rotated and may be conveniently shifted from place to place. At their upper ends the sections A are secured to the cap C, the connection with the cap C and with the base B being preferably effected by means of bands D, (shown in Fig. 1,) which are shaped to embrace the sections A, and are suitably secured to such sections and to the cap C and the base B for the purpose of holding the sections A rigidly in the desired position. Upon the post I fit bands E, which embrace the postand are provided opposite the laterally-opening spaces between the sections A withoutwardly-arched bails F, which form guide-supports for the arms, serving to support such arms when they are fully extended and when they are at half-mast and also operating to draw the arms into folded position and to maintain them in such position when so adjusted. p

Near the lower end of the post I provide hooks G, which may be set to span the spaces between the sections A and bear below the knobs on the slides, such knobs resting on the hooks G to hold said slides in positionto secure the arms at half-mast.

` The slides H, H', H2, and H3 operate Within the space between the sections A and are provided with ribs or rails I, which operate in the grooves A', formed in the sides of the sections A near the inner corners of the latter. This grooved construction of the sections A and the rails on the slides is preferred because it holds the parts securely in the desired relation and permits an easy movement of the slides up and down, as is desired.

This is preferably eifected by connecting the sections I-I and H2 rigidly together,so they move up and down together at all times, and to arrange the portion which connects the slides H and H2 at H4 soit will bear above a portion H5 near the lower end of the section H3, which section H3 also has a portion H3, which bears below the slide QH. By this 'construction it will be seen the slide H may be moved up alone, or the slides H H2 may be moved up alone, or all four slides may be moved up by lifting the slide H3. For convenience in lifting the slides I prefer to attachto each slide a block, which operates in the ways between ICO the sections A, and to mount the knobs J on said block, so the knobs Will project beyond the post. Where desired to avoid stooping, the knobs may be arranged near the upper ends of the slides or upon the under sides of the arms near their outer ends, but ordinarily I prefer them as shown.

It Will be understood that Where' desired the slides may be divided transversely into sections one above the other and each carrying an arm, as presently described, so one or more of the arms of any of the slides may be thrown out into position for use.

The arms K may be of any suitable shape and are hinged at their inner ends to their respective slides, preferably by means of the strap-hinges, one of which is provided for each arm, and the strap secured to the arm is arranged on the upper side thereof, so the end of the arm will stop itself When extended in position for use, being braced in such position by the bail or loop hereinbefore described. W'hen in folded position, the arms lie at their inner ends within the spaces or recesses between the adjacent sections A and take up but little room, as Will be understood from the drawings. In extending or retracting the arms the bails orloops form guidesupports therefor and serve to contract the arms in a smooth easy manner.

\ If desired, hat-hooks may be provided on the sections A and in some instances on the under sides of the arlns, near the outer ends of the latter, to receive hats when the arms are folded, or the lifting-knobs may be placed on the arms to serve such purpose, as Well as for opening and closing the rack.

It is manifest that the device may be used for displaying various kinds of merchandise and Will be found convenient in barbershops, offices, and other places Where numbers of men are usually congregated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A rack substantially as described comprising a post consisting of upright cornersections spaced apart at their inner corners forming a central space or Way and at their adjacent edges forming lateral recesses between the latter, the slides operating in the space between said sections and the arms hinged to the slides and iitting at their inner ends Within said lateral spaces, substantially as described.

2. A rack comprising a post composed of upright sections spaced apart at their inner corners and adjacent edges the slides operating in the space between said adjacent edges the bails or loops secured to the post and lapping the space between the adjacent edges of the uprights and the arms hinged at their inner ends to the slides and projecting over the said bails or loops and adapted to be supported and guided thereby, substantially as described.

3. A rack substantially as described comprising a post composed of upright sections spaced apart at their adjacent edges forming lateral recesses, the band encircling said post and having bails or loops lapping said recesses and projecting outwardly, the slides operating in said post and the arms hinged to the slides and bearing upon the bails or loops, substantially as described.

4t. The combination in a rack substantially as described of the post consisting of the upright sections, the top, the metal plate secured to said top and upright sections, the base, the metal plate secured to said base and to the upright sections, the slides operating in the post, the arms hinged to the slides, and the band encircling the post and having bails or loops arranged to support the arms, substantially as described.
