SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,712, dated October 18, 1898. Application led January 3l, 1898. Serial No. 668,630. (No model.)

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved ratchet-wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing a modified construction of the nut-engaging head of my improved ratchet-wrench. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of an adjustable plate made use of in carrying out myinvention.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the wrench-handle, which is of any suitable size and length, there being a ring or collar 2 formed integral with the lower end of said handle. this ring 2, in opposite sides thereof, are the screws 3, the purpose of which will be presently shown.
4 indicates a rectangular head ,with the rear end of which is formed integral a circular projection 5, that is provided in its periphery with a continuous groove 6, and said projection 5 is of such a size as that it will easily rotate within the ring 2. When this projection is properly located in said ring 2, the screws 3 are properly seated in said ring 2, and by so doing their points will engage in the groove 6, and thereby rotatably retain the head 4 within the ring 2.
Formed through the head 4 and projection 5 is a rectangular opening 7, and arranged to lit in a recess 8, formed in the bottom of the head 4, is a plate 9, which may, if desired, have its upper face corrugated or roughened in any suitable manner. This plate 9 is provided with a pair of guide-pins 10,which pass through suitablyarranged apertures in the lower portion of the head 4, and passing upwardly through an aperture formed in the lower portion of this head is a set-screw 11,

having a winged head 12. The point of this set-screw 11 engages in a suitably-formed recess in the under side of the plate 9, and by means of said set-screw said plate is elevated. By this construction the wrench may be arranged to engage nuts of -different size.
Formed in the head 4 at the point where the projection 5 joins said head is acontinuous row of ratchet-teeth 13. Located upon the front face of the handle 1 immediately above the head 4.is a clip 14, which is so formed as that its lower end lies at a point a slight distance in front of the handle 1, and between said lower end and the handle 1 is pivoted a pair of pawls 15, that extend in opposite directions. The rear ends of said pawls are provided with flat faces 16 at right angles to each other, and the lower free ends of the inverted- U-shaped springs 17 bear immediately upon these iiat faces. This spring 17' is located beneath the clip 14 and held in position by a lug 18, extending rearwardly from said clip 14. Only one of the pawls 15 is made use of at a time-that is, when one is thrown into engagement with the ratchetteeth 13 the opposite one is elevated, as shown When either of the pawls is elevated, it is held in position by the pressure of the arm of the spring that bears against one of the fiat faces of the elevated pawl. In Fig. 3 the head 4 is shown with a hexagonal opening instead of a rectangular opening, and when the head is so formed it is adapted for use upon nuts of a uniform size. rTherefore in this form of the wrench diiferent heads with different-sized openings must be provided.
By forming the openings 7 all the way throughthe head the wrench may be located upon an eXtra long nut or may be located upon a nut through which the bolt projects some distance.
In the preferred form of the wrench said wrench may be used upon nuts ran gingin size downwardly from the size of the aperture 7, the only adjustment required being the manipulation of the set-screw 11.
