TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, LAZARE CANTEL', of the city and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Trunks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Y Figure 1 is a section of the frame surrounding the trunk where the upper and lower portions of said trunk come together, the said parts being a short distance from each other; and
Figure 2 is a vertical section ofthe frame at the hinge, the parts being compressed tightly so as to be air or water-tight. V
Similar letters denote the same parts.
The object of my'invention is to render a trunk, hat-case, valise, or similar article, water-proof by an elastic material introduced around the frames supporting the edges of the top and bottom or side portions ot' the trunk, or similar article, and is an improvement upon the device for which Letters Patent were granted to me December 20, 1853.
My present invention consists in an elastic pipe or cord introduced Within a grooved wooden frame, to which the edges of the trunk are secured, said cord or pipe being compressed within a grooved frameisim'ilarly attached to the other portion of the trunk, or similar article. This mode of construction enables me to employ a sheetmetal edge around the frame at the point of union of the water-proof leather of the trunk with said frame, and to construct a very cheap and strong trnnk-frame, which, when the top andl bottom of the trunk are pressed together by a fastening, such as`shown in my patent oi' ll'lay 12, 1863, or by any other suitable means, will render the trunk water-tight at the joint between the said parte.
vIn the dra-Wing, a represents the leather composingr the bottom of the tru-uli, and 6 the lea-ther forming the top of the trnnkj; these parts are to be of any desired size or shape. ais a wooden frame surrounding the bbttom a, and cZ'is a similar frame around the inside of the -top b, the edges of the leather setting into recesses formed aroundthe outside edges of thewooden frames. e is a metal band nailed upon the outside otn the leather a and the frame c, the nails 1 l at the same time irmly securing the lea-ther to the wooden frame. ]"is a metal band attached to the frame d and projecting suiiciently to allow of its closing outside the band e, the said band c passing into a groove, 3, around the frame d. The tcp and bottom of the trunk are united by the hinge h, which extends the whole length, or nearly so, ct' one side of the trunk. The contiguous surfaces of the frames c el are grooved for the reception of an India-rubber pipe or cord, z', and the shape of said grooves is such that when the frames are closed upon each other the elastic cord or pipe will be compressed and make a perfectly tight joint. The surfaces of the frames are to be covered with India-rubber cloth, or other water-proof material, which, in one of the'frames, also encloses the pipe or elastic strip z', so as to hold it to place.
I do not claim a surface, cord, or pipe of India rubber applied to make `the mouths of mail-bags cr joints of trunks Water-proof, but what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The grooved wooden frames c d, secured'to the edges of the trunk or similar article by the bands e and f, and hinge i, and suitable nails, in combination with the elastic strip or pipe z', as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof` I have hereunto set my signature this twentyninth day of May, A. D. 1865.
