REGULATOR FOR GAS-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 61 1,471, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed November 19, 1897. Serial No. 659,133. (No model.)
To all whom, it' may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT GILCHRIEST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators for Gas-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Fig. 7 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a device for making the plugs.
This invention has relation to a regulator for gas-burners whereby the consumption of gas may be controlled to suit the requirements; and it consists in an obstructive device oi' peculiar character placed within the tip of the burner for the purpose of retarding the flow of gas from the service-pipe to the point of combustion, with means whereby said device may be adjusted to cause a greater or less retardation of the flow.
The invention also consists in the combination, with an ordinary burnert-ip, of a plug or obstruction of this character, together with means for adjustably securing the plug in the tip.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the tip of an ordinary gas-burner. B designates one of the plugs or obstructions, which is designed to be adjustably secured in such tip for the purpose of retarding the iiow of gas, as above stated. This plug or obstruction may be constructed of stone, metal, composition, wood, or any suitable material. In the form shown in Fig.
4 it has two iattened sides b b, which provide passages or ways to permit a partial flow of gas thereby. It may, however, have but one flattened side or as many as may be desired, or one or more of the sides may be grooved, as indicated at c in Fig. 5. The plug is also tapered upon its flattened or grooved sides, as indicated at d, being largest at its lowerend. Extending diametrically through the plug, one above the other, are two or more small pin-holes f, and formed through the lateral walls of the tip at opposite points are similar pin-holes g, said holes f and g being to receive a pin h, by means of which the plug is held in place. When the plug is secured by passing the pin through the lower hole f', it will be readily' seen that a greater retardation of gas takes place than when it is inserted through the upper of said holes.
The only change required in the pillar and tip of an ordinary gas-burner in order to permit this invention to be applied thereto is the provision of the pinholes g in the tip.
The device not only restricts and regulates the consumption of gas according to the requirements, but it also prevents to a large extent the feature known as blowing Vhen the plugs are made of metal or other material which" can be shaped by casting, they can be conveniently made by means of a small two-part mold K, such as shown in Fig. 8. with transverse grooves 7c, in which wires K are placed, said wires being subsequently withdrawn to provide in the plug the pinholes f.
One or both of the pin-holes gin the tip should be countersunk to seat the head of the pin 71, iiush with the surface, sothat said head will not present an obstruction to the insertion of the tip in the pillar.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The herein-described devicefor regulating the iiow of gas in gas-burners, said device comprising a small solid plug adapted to iit within an ordinary gas-burner tip, said plug being of increasing diameter toward its base, and partially cut away upon one or more of its sides to form gas-passages, together with means whereby the said plug may be adjusted' longitudinally in the tip and secured in its different adjustments for the purpose of changing the area of the said passages, substantially as specified.
