IINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL E. IRISH, OF GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN.
BED-BOTTOM CASTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 61 ,411, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed July 20, 1897. Serial No. 6%,270. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL E. IRISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottom Castings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specification.
My invention relates to bed-bottoms and attachments therefor whereby the bed-bottom is securely held in place and is easily and quickly removed whenever it is desired; and my invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the specification and different views of the drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bedbottom and T-bars. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the bed-bottom. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of part of the casting at one end of bed-bottom. Fig. lis a detail perspective of the arm pivoted to casting shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective of casting at the other end of bed-bottom. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of the T-bar. Fig. 7 is a perspective of V-shaped links, showing the apex bent down and Fig. 8, a longitudinal section of spring and stop-links. Fig. 9 is a side view of bar-link.
The body of the bed-bottom is composed of transverse rows of substantially V-shaped links 1. The apex of each link is formed into a rounded eye 2, which is bent downward the thickness of the Wire of which the bed-bottom is composed.
In the body portion of the bed-bottom the eye 2 is nearly but not quite closed, a sufficient space being left to receive the terminals 3 of the links of the row next adjacent, connected to said eyes in the manner shown when the bed-bottom is in afolded condition. These terminals are made parallel for a short distance in order that they may nicely fit into the open spaces of the eye 2 when the bed is folded. It will be noticed that the end row of links into which the coiled springs 4 are hooked have the eye 2 entirely closed, the wire being crossed and twisted, with the ends extending in'opposite directions, whereby a complete ring is formed. By this construction the springs are prevented from slipping out of place when the bed-bottom is folded and the form of the eye is kept intact when the transverse bar-link 5 connects the coiled springs in the manner shown. The object of this bar-link is to prevent thelinks of the bed-bottom from being spread apart while being handled and thereby being injured or bent out of shape, thus causing the netting to become tangled and damaged. This is an important feature, as it is my purpose to provide a bed-bottom which shall be easily rolled, handled, or folded without any of the parts being injured or. displaced. Within each coiled spring 4 are links which are looped together and at each end connected to the respective end of the coiled spring. One end of the spring is passed through an aperture in the T-bar and given a twist with which one end of the stop-link engages. The other end of the spring passes through the eye 2 and forms aloop into which the other end of the spring 4 hooks. By this arrangement should the bed be heavily weighted and the tension of the coiled springs be at their limit the weight will be thrown upon the stop-links, and the springs thereby will be relieved of any undue strain. Particular attention is called to the manner in which the stop-links and the springs are connected, as above described. The purpose of this arrangement is, first, to check the tension of the spring inside of its life when overweighted, and, second, to prevent the hooks in the end of the spring from being drawn out or straightened when subjected to an overstrain, as is the case in my Patent No. 566,180. Constructed and united in the manner set forth the links and springs have a twofold object and thereby accomplish a new result.
7 represents the castings for one end of the bed-bottom, and 8 the castings at the other end, which consist of a flat strip 20, having a stop or rest 12 and arms 13 pivoted thereto. The castings 7 are formed with a slot 9 and a recess or depression 10, whereby a shoulder 11 is formed, as shown in Fig. 5. The castings 8, or more particularly the fiat strips, are formed with a stop or rest 12, and to these castings arms 13 are pivoted. These arms have enlarged ends, in which, on the inside, are slots 14, and when in position rest upon stops 12. The slots 9 and 14 in the castings are formed to receive the web 15 of the T- bar, while the flanges 16 rest in the recess 10 of the castings 7 and against the outer ends of the pivoted arms 13. The shoulders 11 prevent the T-bar from undue lateral movement when the parts are all in position. The stops or rests 12 on the flat strips 13 of the castings 8 are located in the inner lower corner of the casting a little below the dead-center line of the pivoted arm 13. It will be seen that when the T-bar engages the castings 7 at one end and the T-bar at the other end engages the arms 13 and the arms 13 are sprung back into position and rest on the stops 11 the weight on the bed-bottom will securely hold the same in place, since the stops are below the dead-center line. When it is desired to remove the bed-bottom, the
T-bar carried by the pivoted arms is grasped 1 tion is animprovement on my patent covering a wire hammock, No. 566,180. I do not herein make claim to any construction shown and described in said patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a bed-bottom haying end T-bars and pivoted castings at one end having slots at the inside of the outer ends and fixed castings at the other end having like terminals, the webs of the T-bars fitting said slots, all arranged as set forth.
2. The combination of a bed-bottom having T-bars at each end thereof, castings at one end including pivoted bars slotted in their outer ends and a fixed casting at the other end having like slots, the webs of the T-bars fitting said slots and being removable therefrom, and stops below the dead-center of the pivoted bars, all arranged as set forth, whereby the bed-bottom is sprung taut into position and is readily removed when the pivoted bars are lifted up.
3. The combination of abed-bottom having end T-bars, castings at one end having slots into which the web of the T-bars fits, and rethe other end having slots in which the web of the other T-bar fits, all arranged as set forth.
4.. The combination of a bed bottom terminating in T-bars, castings at one end having slots in their outer ends receiving the web of the T-bars, castings at the other end having a limiting-stop at their inner ends and a stop or rest at their outer. ends below the deadcenter line, said latter castings including pivoted bars having slots in their outer ends into which the web of the T-bar fits, all arranged as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEMUEL .E. IRISH.
