SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,287, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed December 81, 1897. Serial No. 665,194.. (No model.) Patented in Germany October 8, 1895, No. 88,381, and in Austria November 30, 1897, No. 47/511313.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAZAR MLADEN SERBAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in the city of Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria- I-Iungary, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Changeable Toes for Horseshoes, (for which I have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 88,381, dated October 8, 1895, and in Austria, No. 47/5,133,'dated November 30, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in horseshoes, and more particularly to changeable'toes for horseshoes and their connecting devices.
It is the special object of this invention to insure a quick and reliable attaching and removal of the toe.
The toe is securely fixed to the horseshoe by means of a peculiar attachment consisting in a securing-screw and laps which embrace the horseshoe.
The invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in all of the drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view of the toe part of a complete horseshoe attached to a hoof; Fig. 2, a vertical section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view through the fore part of the horseshoe with a conically downward converging slot for the connecting-screw. Fig. 4 is an inside view, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 illustrate a modification with semicircular conical slot and bridge, Fig. 6 being an oblique view, Fig. 7 an inside view, and Fig. 8 a section. Figs. 9, 10, and 11 show another modification with securing-bar, Fig. 9 being a plan view, Fig. 10 an inside view, and Fig. 11 a crosssection. Fig. 12 illustrates the manner of inserting the connecting-bolt into ahorseshoe on the hoof, Fig. 13 represents a screw-bolt with truncated pyramidal head. Fig. 1 1 shows a screw-bolt with semicircular truncated conical head and supporting-laps. Fig. 15 shows a screw-bolt with laps only. Fig. 16 is a perspective View of a toe with full lap in front known manner, is enlarged on the fore bent part and is provided at the bent part toward the heel with a recess 1), into which recess the head al of the toe-screw d may be inserted. This recess b may be shaped either conically downward diverging'or prismatic, with parallel sides, or it may be cylindrical or semicylindrical.
Figs. 3 to 5 illustrate a horseshoe with pyramidal slot, Figs. 6 to 8 with a semicircular slot, and Figs. 9 to 11 with a somewhat different semicircular slot for the toe-screw. In order to partly relieve the screw-head al the slot may be provided with a projection or stay 1),, upon which may rest a corresponding lap or projection d of the head of the screw, Figs. 2, 8, and 11.
Prismatic or cylindrical heads, Fig. 15, are used solely for supporting the screw-bolt on the projection 12,, extending flange-like on three sides. The screw-bolt, Figs. 13 and 15, whose head is inserted into slot b, extends outward with its threaded part d passing through a hole f, in plate f which carries the toe and receives there a screwed-011 nut g, which secures the toe to the horseshoe, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The toe consists (see Figs. 16 to 20) of the toe-body proper, f, and of the angle-plate f which rests on the bottom side of the horseshoe and embraces the latter by means of one or two laps h 71 These laps may be made of one continuous piece, as shown in Figs. 16 to 18, or they may be divided in flaps, as shown in Figs. 19 and 20. One only-for instance, h,
may be located on the external bend or protuberance, Fig. 17, or one, 71 may be on the internal one, Fig. 17, or both, h 77. may be applied, as is shown in Figs. 19 and 20. The laps h 72 may also be constructed in such a manner that they are directed outwardly when the toe is unmounted, Fig. 20, and when the toe is pressed against the horseshoe then the laps are pressed against the wall of the same, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 20.
The connection of the toe is effected in a simple manner by laying or putting at first the screw (Z, with its head d laterally into the slot 1), Fig. 12, whereupon the toef, with its plate f is put upon the bolt d and secured by screwing 011 the nut g. The removal of the toe f when used up is effected in the reverse manner. The laps h h extending upward over the edge of the horseshoe, have the purpose to fix first the toe securely to the shoe and to take up shocks, strain, &c., and thus to relieve the screw.
In order to protect the nut g against damage, ribs 712 may be provided on the lower side of the toe-plate f alongside of its side walls, the end of the ribs being a little swelled at 70 to strengthen them. These ribs project beyond the nut g and are worn out uniformly with the toe and protect the nut g, preventiug it from quickly wearing out.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A horseshoe with enlarged fore-bent portion provided at the bend with a slot, a screwbolt fitting in the slot, a changeable toe composed of the toe-body proper, an angle-plate with opening for the screw-bolt and resting on the lower side of the horseshoe and embracing the same by laps, and a securing-nut, as specified.
2. A horseshoe with enlarged fore-bent portion provided at the bend with a pyramidal slot, a screw-bolt with a truncated pyramidal head fitting in the slot, a changeable toe composed of the toe-body proper, an angle-plate with opening for the screw-bolt and resting on the lower side of the horseshoe and embracing the same by divided laps, a securingnut, and nut-protecting ribs on the toe, as specified.
3. In combination with a horseshoe having a fore-bent portion with a pyramidal slot, a changeable toe composed of the toe body proper carried by a plate provided with divided laps and an opening, a screw-bolt with a truncated pyramidal head fitting into the slot and passing through the opening in the plate, a securing-nut, and nut-protecting ribs with enlarged heads on the toe, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LAZAR MLADEN SERBIXN.
