Patented Sept;
F. ATHERTON;
TELEGRAPH TAPE.
(Application filed Nov. 12, 1897.)
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORN EYS.
UNITE SATES ATENT FRANK ATHERTON, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
TELEG RAPH-TAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,339, dateol'september 6, 1898.
Application filed November 12, 1897. 7 Serial No. 658,225. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ATHERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraph-Tapes; and
tions which will call the operators attention to the fact that the end of the coil of tape is approaching, to thus give him time and opportunity to substitute a new coil of tape for the one on the receiver, and which marks .or indications can be quickly and readily applied to the said coil of tape while being manufactured with only a slight increase in the cost thereof.
The invention consists in the improved tape and in the marks or indications arranged on'a specified length at the inner end of the coil of tape, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is.
a front elevation of a coil of tape provided with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing in detail the inner portion of the coil partially unwound.
In said drawings, a represents a coil of tape such as is generally used on the receivers of the telegraphic instruments, having a specified length of its inner end portion coated with any suitable color, as at b in the drawings, while the extreme ends of the said tape that is to say, the inner coils-are glued or pasted together, as at c, to form a bushing around the central hole or opening d, by means of which the said coil ismounted on the axle of the reoeivinginstrument. It must beremarked that the coating of suitable color covers the marginal portions of one or both of the surfaces of the tape, forming stripes or borders, such as 19, leaving a portion a of the surface uncovered and extending from the inner end of the coil, or, if desired, from the glued portion only thereof, a suitable distance. It will be understood that it is only necessary to provide said coating or marks upon the outer surface of the tape and that only a short length of said tape needs to be provided as per above to accomplish the purpose intended, though variations in these particulars are fully within the scope of my invention. This arrangement will be found of great advantage, especially in places-such as stock exchanges, brokers oifices, &c. where messages are continuously coming in and where a great many coils of tape are used, as thereby the operator is enabled to substitute a new coil of tape as soon as the marks or indications appear upon the unwound portion of the coil.
I do not intend to limit myself to the precise construction shown and described, as Various alterations can be made without changing the scope of my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A light-colored coil or roll of telegraphtape having its inner convolutions glued or pasted together to form a bushing, said tape having the marginal portions only of one or both of its surfaces colored fora specified distance and near the free end of the inner convolutions of said coil or roll, in contrast with the remaining portions ofsaid surfaces, substantially as described.
, 2. A light-colored coil or roll of telegraphtape having its inner convolutions glued or pasted together to form a bushing,.said tape having the marginal portions only of its receiving-surface colored for a specified distance from the free end of the inner convolution of said coil or roll, in contrast to the remaining portions of said surface, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of November, 1897.
