SPOUT-HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,683, dated August 23, 1898.

Beit known that I, HENRY F. KUSS, of Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and Improved Spout-I-Ioisting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to apparatus for hoisting and lowering spouts or platforms employed for discharginginaterial from a dock into a boat or from a platform into a car; and the object is to provide a simple apparatus by means of which the pulling leverage will be changed with the changing positions of the spout in raising or lowering, thus making itfornparatively easy for a man to raise and lcwer the spout.
I will describe a spout-hoisting apparatus embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a section on the line 1 l of Fig. 2 of an apparatus embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a dock or platform having an inclined chute 2. Pivoted to the uprights 3 is avertically-swinging spout 4, which, as here shown, has side pieces 5. When in its lower position, this spout 4 forms a continuation of the chute 2. The uprights 3 extend above the plane of the dock or platform, and having bearings in boxes secured to these uprights is a drum 6, which is tapered from its center to its opposite ends, and these tapered portions are each provided with a spiral groove or channel 7, in which cables 8 and 9 are designed to wind. These cables 8 and 9' have connection with the central portion of a bail 10, attached to the outer end of the spout at.
On each end of the drum (5 is a disk l1, provided with a series of holes, through either one of which a pin 12 may be inserted and extended into an opening in the upright 3, so as to hold the drum and consequently support the spout in any desired position of elevation. On the shaft of the drum 6 is an equalizing-drum 13,which is tapered from one end to the other and is provided with a spiral groove or channel in which an equalizingcable 14 is to wind. Attached to the drum 13 or to the shaft thereof is a gear-wheel 15, meshing with a pinion 16 on a shaft 17, to the outer squared `end of which is attached a crank 18. The inner end of the shaft is also .adapted to receive a crank. The cable 14 engages witha pulley 19, having bearings in brackets secured to a portion of the dock or platform framing below the lower end of the inclined chute 2, and attached-to the lower end of this cable is a counterbalance-weight 20. To prevent the weight fronr swingingl outward so as to strike against the side of a boat or a car, I extend a rod 21 from the eyebolt of the weight to a connection with a pulley 22, movable on the curved guide 23.
When the spout 4 is in its lower position, the cables 8 and Q'will be engaged with the smaller diameters of the drum G. The cable 14, however, will be in engagement with the larger diameter of the equalizingdrum 13. Therefore when it is desired to raise the spout and during the operation of raising the cables 8 and 9will wind toward the larger diameter of the drum 6 and the cable 14 will unwind toward the smaller diameterof the drum 13, and thus the power required in raising the spout will be equalized.
If desired, aratchet-wheel 24 maybe placed on the shaft 17 and engaged by a pawl 2'.
Having thus. described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A swinging spout or platform raising and lowering apparatus, comprising a drum tapered in both directions, with the smaller diameter near its ends, the said tapered portions being each provided with a spiral groove or channel, cables engaging in said grooves or channels and having connection with the outer end of the spout or platform, a tapered and spirally-channeled equalizing-drum on the shaft of the irst-nalned drum, a crank for rotating said drums, a counterbalanceweight having a cable engaging with the equalizing-drum, and means for preventing the weight from swinging outward to strike a boat or the like, substantially as specified.
