JOHN B. MCCUTCHEON, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNCR TO THE INDIANA MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF. INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PNEUMATIC STRAW-STACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,623, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed June 5, 1897- Serial No. 639,547. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JoHNB. MoOUToHEoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Straw-Stackers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to improve that variety of pneumatic straw-stackers which are provided with telescoping trunks or chutes which are capable of being extended or contracted as desired.
Said invention consists in certain improvements of the construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view, partly in central vertical section and partly in side elevation,of the trunk or chute of a pneumatic straw-stacker embodying my said invention, the same being mounted upon the usual turn-table; Figs. 2, 3, and at, transverse sectional views of the same on the dotted lines 2 2, 3 3, and i 4:, respectively Fig. 5, a transverse sectional view as seen from the dotted line 5 5 in Fig. 1,
showing the yoke-frame and the gear mounted thereon in elevation; and Fig. 6 a detail sectional view showing the spring attachment to which one end of the rope by which the telescoping operation is effected is attached.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the turn-table of a pneumatic strawstacker; B,the pivoted yoke or frame by which the movable portion of the stacker-chute is carried; C C C the several sections of a pneumatic stacker trunk or chute; D, the rope by which the telescoping section C is moved; E, a hood or mouthpiece on the end of the stacker; F, the rope by which said hood or mouthpiece may be manipulated, and G a tackle by which the trunk or chute of the stacker as a whole is elevated or depressed.
The trunk or chute, as is usual in telescopic devices of this character, is composed mainly of the sections C and C the latter of which is somewhat larger in diameter than and surrounds the former. Within the section C is secured a hollow rib c, which forms a tubular passage for one strand of the rope D. At the forward end of this hollow rib is placed a sheave d, over which said rope passes. The outer-section C slides over the inner section C and is preferably provided with a spring attaching device C for the other end of the rope D. The spring characterof the attachment is so that the rope shall always be held at a proper tension. It consists, as shown, of a rod 0 having an ad j usting-nut c on its end, and a spring 8, surrounding said rod and interposed between said nut and a stationary ring C on the part C said ring also forming a support and bearing for the rod 0 There is also preferably provided on the lower side at the inner end of said section C an antifriction-truck 0 which runs on a track t on the under side of the section 0.
The rope D runs from the rod C of the springiattaching device over a pulley b on the upper end of the yoke or frame B, and thence around a spool Z), mounted on a shaft B on said frame, thence into the passage formed by the hollow rib 0', around the sheave d, and back between the trunk parts C and C to the inner end of said trunk part C to which it is fastened at the point p. Said sheave d is shown as arranged in a vertical position in respect to the trunk or chute, and I prefer this arrangement, as thus the ropes are kept in line. In operation winding the shaft B by means of the crank B 01 otherwise will wind the rope D in the desired direction, and the stacker-trunk part C will thereby be extended or withdrawn, as the case may be.
The hood or mouthpiece E is carried by a rock-shaft E, mounted-at the extreme forward end of the trunk part C An arm 8 on said shaft is connected to the rope F, and
said rope F runs back to a spool 19 on the tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a pneumatic strawstacker, of the telescopic parts 0 and 0 an interior hollow rib 0, within said part '0', a vertically-positioned sheave 01 mounted at the front end thereof, a rope D passing from the inner end of the outer part (3" between the two parts to the outer end of said inner part, and over the sheave d, thence back through said hollow rib, out through -a perforation in said part 0, around suitable spools, and thence to an attachment on the outer portion of said trunk part 0 said several parts be ing arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a telescopic trunk or chute for pneumatic stackers, of two parts or sections, the inner section having a perforation in the upper side thereof, a hollow interior rib therein leading forward from said perforation, a sheave mounted therein at the forward end of said rib, and a rope passing within said hollow rib around said sheave and thence between the two parts or sections to the inner or lower end of the outer part or section, to which it is connected, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Battle Creek, Michigan, this 1st day of June, A. D. 1897.
JOHN B. McoUTcHEoN.
