Be it known that I, HENRY STEWART, acitizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, county of Whiteside, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Formin g Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a machine for forming boxes from previously-prepared blanks of wood or other material, and has for its object to accomplish all of this and to secure other and further advantages in the matter of construction, adjustment, and operation and to provide a machine which may be easily and quickly manipulated, entirely oi' in part automatic, and capable of being operated with great rapidity.
My improvements involve certain new and useful arrangements or combination of parts and peculiarities of construction, as Will be herein first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
To give a more clear and better understanding of my invention, I will first describe the peculiar construction of the box which the.
machine puts together and then the machine.
The four sides of the box are prepared in one long continuous strip, having at proper intervals transverse V- shaped grooves cut nearly through the stock in such a manner that when the remaining stock is made tough by moistening it will bend and when bent to right angles the side faces of the V- shaped grooves will meet and form miter-corners for three of the corners of a box, the fourth corner being formed by grooving each end of the side blank in sucha way. as When they meet and are driven together they form a lockingcorner. In proper position for the reception of the bottom blanks the side blanks are usually longitudinally grooved and the bottom blanks properly prepared for being folded into said grooves. Glue may also be applied in the miter and locking corner joints in such a way as when properly prepared and put together to form a strong, neat, and substantial box. The operation then of forming boxes from previously-prepared parts is simply to applyv glue to the miter and locking corners and properly wrap the side blanks around the bottom blanks and force the locking-corner ends of the side blanks together. This is substantially what my machine does automatically.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of my machine With a portion of the frame broken away to show the position of the auxiliary frames B and O. A framework is provided to support thc working parts of any suitable design or material, but preferably, as in this design, of cast metal, of which A A A A is the main frame, east in sections and securely fastened together. For additional strength and to be of support for some of the working parts the cross-pieces A A2 are embodied in the main frame. Also as supports for the bearings of different journals the brackets a a a oy c are embodied in the framework. In this framework, with a little modification, especially for the manufacture of any particular-sized box, all the working parts may .Je directly embodied; but for convenience of adjustment and to adapt it for forming different-sized boxes the auxiliary frame l is provided and also the auxiliary frame C, both of' which support important parts and with other adjustments will be more Yfully explained hereinafter.
In the upper part of the machine, at D, is the magazine for the reception of the side blanks, in which are to be piled the side blanks, one upon the other, with theirgrooves downward, their edges, which are to enwrap the bottom blanks, forward, and the center V-shaped groove in line with the apex of the forming-block.
To form the magazine D, I use here the bottom plate d, the back piece d, which is fastened permanently in the frame of the machine and has an opening between it and the bottom plate sufficient for the reciprocating of the plunger J, the adjustable magazine-front D', Figs. 24j and 25, and the end stop, Fig. 23.
The magazine-front D' is hung suspended in guides from the top of the main fralnc by means of the screws df d, which fit in corresponding threads in the cross-piece d'7. By

The bottom of the magazine di is provided with openings through which pass the gluebrushes, and to afford adjustment for the dif'- ferent positions of the glue-brushes for different work (15 is provided with cross-sections d, which may be slid bzwkward and forward in slots provided for the same as the work may require. lmnlediately underneath this magazine is the glue-magazine E, which is a plain tank made of sheet-copper or any suitable material. Through this, fitted in suit able bearings, passes the shaft c. On this shaft at proper intervals (which are changeable) are the brush-wheels c' for gluing the different corners of the boxes. These are revolved with ratchet and pawl c2, which is reeiprocated with a crank ff through the connecting-rod c1.
Figs. 1S and l) are sectional views of one of the brush-wheels, showing in Fig. l!) the brushes in position. It consists of two disks, one or both of which are grooved for the reception of the brushes ci, which are common glue-brushes. \Vhcn the brushes are placed in position and the two disks clamped together, they become as spokes in a hub. The reason for placing them at intervals and the use of the ratchet is apparent when it is considered that in sliding-cover boxes the side blanks have a groove in which the cover slides, and if this groove be filled with glue it would conflict with the passage of the cover. It is also apparent that as the crank ci is driven by an extension of the crank-pin jf' it may be set so as to make the turn of the shaft c at exact intervals and can bring up a set of brushes as the side blank is leaving the machine do the work of applying glue to the various corner-joints and pass down out of the way just before the groove or the sliding cover is reached.

scribed is athird receptacle for the bottom blanks, which will be known. hereinafter as the bottom magazine F. It consists of a V-shaped trough or rack having at its bottom the longitudinal groove or opening f. Also near each end the pulleys f2 f2, in .which and around which passes the cord f3, which has at one extremitythe Weightfl, at the other I the handle f5, and at proper position midway is'fastened to the follower f6. In this magazine are placed the prepared bottom blanks, resting upon one corner and having their faces which are to be bottommost in the boxes facing the front of the machine. The office of the follower is to provide a pressure against the bottoms to force them forward 'as they are fed out by the bottom plunger.
The bottom plunger G reciprocates in guides in the main frame immediately in front of the bottom magazine. lt has a recess with a V-shaped base, which in its lower position comes slightly below the V-shaped trough of the bottom magazine. This recess, .being slightly shallower than the thickness of the bottom blanks, receives but one at a time. This plunger is tted to work freely in prepared guides and is forced upward by means of the cam H on the cam-shaft H. After the cam has passed from under the plunger it drops by its own weight, having delivered its bottom blank between the face-plate 5 and the bottomsupport M andis replenished with another bottom from the bottom magazine.
Y At the bottom `of the magazine for side. blanks is the plunger J ,which is reciprocated and regulated in its throw by the pitman-rods j, which are constructed in two'parts and are capable of being expanded and contracted by. a right-and-left-handthreaded screw-couplingj' and the cranks j?, having various crank-pin holes for the crank-pin j. This plungeris so arranged with 'openings as not to' conflict with theglue-brushes, the middle ope'ningj4 being permanent,while the others may be adj usted to correspond with the position of the glue-,brushes by sliding to the right or the left the sliding projections ji. To guide the plunger J, I provide the ilange-like projection jwhich fits in the groove shown in Fig.
2l. lVith these adjustments the plunger can be so setas with its forward movement to force the side blanks each in turn before'it to such a position on the forming-blockthat4 one of its edges shall overhang the face of the forming-block a sufficient distance to receive and inclose a bottom blank. After the parts have been placed in position by their respective plungers the forming of the box is com-Y faces ofthe above recesses and are hinged so strip the projection k3, which comes in contact with the solid and unbendable portion of the strip, is forced backward,which brings Y h4 forward and bends the strip until the walls of the V-grooves meet, and also brings the two locking-corner grooved ends of the strip together below. bottom blanks from the bottom plunger and retain them in position against the face-plate of the forming-block while they are being inclosed in a side blank, the bottom support M is provided with extending arms m m and the hinged base m', which is fastened to the cross-piece A. The spring m2 gives tension tothe cord m5 forraising the support to allow the removal of the completed boxes. This .cord may be fastened to the forming-head or `connecting-'rod above. A When the box is formed and the bottom-support arms raised, the box is removed from the forming-block by the box-extractor L. This consists of the extending arms l', the hinged support l?, the spring Z3, the cord Z4, which is fastened to the front of the extending arms and passes underneath the hinged support to thetrip Z5. VThis trip may be made in various ways, but is here a strip of'metal, which is fitted to reciprocate' in a groove in the crosspiece of the frame and has an upper extending projection, so as to come in contact with and be forced backward by the plunger J in its backward stroke.

vis made on an incline, so as to overhangat the upper part. The clenching-block is forced forward bythe spring n2, and the distance forward is regulated by the screw n3, which passes through the lug n4.
Thus far the parts have been mostly-described without reference to adjustment, which are unnecessary for the construction of a machine to put together any particularsized box, but which adjustments, it is readily realized, are very important in a machine adapted to a variety of styles and sizes of boxes. So I have provided means of accomplishing these results and will now describe the various adjustments.
As two of the corners of each box for1nednamely, the center ruiter-corner and the locking-cornermust each be in line with the center of all the V and inverted-V shaped recesses of all of these parts, (the forming-clappers excepted,) it is readily apparent that these parts must-be more compactly situated for small boxes than for larger ones. To ae coinplish this difference in position, the auxiliary frame B, Fig. l0, is provided for raising and lowering the clenching-block and the auxiliary frame C for aising and lowering the bottom magazine. These frames are fitted by lugs b2 b2 and b3 to raise and lower in guides in main frame by means of the screws B T' These are operated, as is common in machinery, by means of bevelgears b1 b1, the shaft U", and hand-wheel U3.
As the top of the bottom magazine is really formed in the frame I3, it is apparent that the trougl1,which is described as the bottom magazine, must in order to retain its proper position raise and lower twice as fastas the frame B. Therefore the screw B' is provided with threads at its upper portion for raising the frame 13, measuring twice the number of threads to the inch corresponding to the lug b3 as those at the bottom corresponding to the frame C.
As the position of the V-shaped recess in the bottoni plunger should correspond to that of the bottom magazine, the inside framework g1, Fig. 30, is provided, which may be raised or lowered in the guides g2 g2 by the screw g3, which at its upper end is fitted to lugs in g,while the lower end corresponds to threads through the cross-piece g5. In the forming-head, Fig. 3, this longitudinal adjustmentis provided for by hanging the forming-clappers in forming-chipper frames 765 7t'5, these being provided with lugs 7:7, which coirespond with guiding-grooves in the circular frame 7s10of the forming-head. As the guiding-grooves are parallel with the respective faces of the head, it is apparent that the change of position is accomplished by simply sliding the clapper-frame upward or downward. To assist in this, the screws 7511 7t11are provided, which pass through the base of the formingclapper frames and are hung in swivels 7012 k12. rlhese swivels are formed by the head end of the screw 7511 fitting in the swivel or iange grooved slots. (Shown in Figs. Sand 9.) This slotted part, Figs. S and f), is fitted to rest in the crotch of the circular frame kw. The ilanges s s, which hold this part in position, occupy a similar position eoeee above in the flange-grooves of L10 as do the lugs LT of the forming-dapper frames below.
As referred to, two of the opposite corners of each box formed must be in line with the respective forming parts of the machine. )y referring to Fig. 3i it will be seen that in a square if a line be drawn from one corner to the other the other two corners are in a horizontal line, and the angle formed by this line and the sides of the square are equal; but in an oblong rectangle the other opposite coi'- ners are not in the same horizontal line and the angle 1 is greater than the angle 2. Itis apparent then that the correct position of the different parts is to have the side faces of their respective V or inverted-V shaped recesses tilted to correspond with the respective angles of the box. I accomplish this in all the parts in practically the same way-namel y, by providing an inside circular part that revolves in a corresponding-circular opening in the outside part-and as the center of each circular part is the bottom of the V or the apcxiof the inverted V of each part it is apparent that these parts can be tilted to any desired angle without changing position of the base of the V or the apex of the inverted Vs of any of the parts, thus meeting the requirements. In the forming-head the circular part is made in sections, the inside section 7:1" be ing larger than the outside section 7913. These parts are fastened together byscrews 7t11, and each section is iltted to corresponding sections of the outside part 7511, having corresponding circular openings and being fastened together with screws 7c10 7cm. lVith all parts in position and screws tightened the head will become as a solid head; but when loosened the inside circular parts may be revolved to bring the Vshaped recess to any position required.

The circular adjustment of the bottoln magazine is similar to that of the forminghead. The circular part f7 is fastened to the bottom magazine and is fitted to the circular openings f8 of the frame C. In the bottom plunger this adjustment consists of the cir cular part g, which is fitted to revolve in the circular opening of the movable frame g and may be tilted to any desired angle and fastened with the nut (/1. In the forming-block this adjustment is found in thecireular part t', which is fitted to revolve in the circular opening of the forming-block frame loosening the screws tu the block may be tilted to any angle, and by tightening the screws the block is clamped rigid in any position. As it is only necessary that the face-plate against which the bottom rests should approximate the size of the box to be formed, the forming-block consists here of a horizontalbar projection of the circular part t', against the end of which may be fastened by means of the screw t" any size face-plate that may be required.
In the clenching-block, Figs. 13 and 1.4-, the

circular adjustment is provided for by the circular opening of the lower part a5, in which is fitted the circular parts of the upper part n, which has at its base a ange-like projection nl, which is fitted in a corresponding ange-groove in the lower part, and the upper part is fastened in position in the lower part by the countersunken set-screw a8.
y Not previously described is the steamjacket E', which enwraps the glue-tank on two sides, the bottom and one end, its office being to form a support for the glue-tank and keep the glue hot therein. It is a hollow jacket made of suitable material. The side walls are shown at e7, Fig. l5. One end has an opening in which the glue-tank may be inserted and removed at will and has an inlet and an outlet steam-pipe E4 E4, through which the steam passes.
The operation of the machine is quite simple. The parts are rst adjusted to the size of the boxes whichit is desired to form, the magazine for side blanks filled in proper position with prepared side blanks, the magazine for bottom blanks is filled with prepared bottom blanks, the glue-tank with gluein liquid form, steam is turned into the steamjacket, and power is applied to the drivingpulley P. As power is applied direct to the crank-wheel that drives the forming-head and through positive bevel-gears to drive the other parts, it is evident that each part must do its work in exact time and when properly set will run in perfect harmony with all the other parts. The two plungers place in position around the forming-block at about the same time their respective parts of a box, the side blank having its corner grooves filled with glue as it leaves the magazine. The bottom support retains the bottom in position, the plungers recede, the clenching-block springs forward, thefforming-head is driven downward, bending the center groove of .the side blank to form a miter-corner, and, there being greater pressure againstthe forked projection than the projection 7a4 of the formingclapper, k3 is forced backward, bringing 154 forward and bending the other V-grooves to form miter-joints. A The forming-head vnow comes in contact with the forming-block and forces it downward to clench the locking corner joint in the recess of the clenching-block. As the forming-head recedes the formingblock is raised by the weighted levers, the bottom support is lifted by the cord, andthe completed box is removed by the extractor and all is ready to repeat the operation.
