Be it known that I, ALLEN SHEPARD, of'Ashland, in the county of Snflolk, and State of Massachusetts,

"have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lamp Shades; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur. 4 p

My invention relates to that class of lamp shades which are constructed of paper or similar material, folded as in the patent granted to St. John, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of metallic support and cap for the-same. In using this shade, it has heretofore been customary to support it by a circular rim of tin placed inside of the shade, and having wire arms attached, which protruded up through the centre,

. and clasped the lamp chimney above. To this device there'are several objections: first, it does not spread the shade properly and does not hold-it securely; second,.it has no cap to cover the upper ends of the folds of the 4 shade, and. hence leaves themin an unprotected condition, andgives to the shade aver-y unfinished and hips:-

fect appearance. To remedy or obviate these objections is the object of my invention.

I first construct an annular m'etallicring, B, the lower portion of which is made flaring or inclined outward,

nt 'a l at which the shade is desired to be held, and having its upper portionoformed into a vertical collar,

#8 shown in figs. 1 and 2. To the inside of this ring, B, are riveted three spring arms, a, made of thin strips of sheet metal, projecting some distance above and below the ring, and being properly-curved to clasp the chimney as is usual in the ordinary lamp shades. I then form an annular cap or ring, 0, with the hole in its centre of proper size to fit over the vertical portion of B, to which it is secured by projections e, updn the outer surface of the nppenpart of B, as shown in fig. 1, these projections e being formed by indentationsas there represented,

. or in any other suitable manner the cap C bein'g sufficiently flexible to allow it to be shoved or crowded over the projections and thus unite the parts B and G with sufiicient firmness to hold them in place, and-still permit th m to be separated whenever desired. This cap 0 is curved of proper form transversely to-fit over the upper end of the shade A,.and thus hold it down in contact with .the upper face of the flaring portion of the ring, B,

thereby properly spreading the shade, and at the sametime securing itfirmly in its place and preventing it from becoming tilted ordisplaced. The outer edge of 0 extends out far enough to cover the ends of the folds, and,

while holding the shadeA properly in place, atfthe same time covers the ends of the folds and gives to the shade a. very neat and finished appearance. I If preferred, the cap may be formed as represented in fig. 3, and then secured by means of the oil'set or bend a, in the arms a, as there represented, the arms a beingsprung together snflicient to permit the ring or cap C to be shoved over them, when they will spring outward, and the notches e, engaging over the edge of, the ring (7,. will hold it securely in position. These parts, A and B, will be struck up in dies by the usual methods, and may be ornamented in any desired manner.
