Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MITCHELL, of Weaverville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'plication of my invention.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective buckle or device for connecting the ends of a strap, and is es pecially adapted for connecting the ends of a strap that may have become broken or extend the length of a strap by adding a section thereto.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in a buckle comprising a rectangular frame having a recess in the inner side of one of the cross-bars and recesses in the upper part of the side bars adjoining the opposite cross-bar, in combination with an independent plate comprising a cross-bar anda tongue extending therefrom, the latter engaging the recess in the cross-bar of the rectangular frame, while the cross-bar of the plate is adapted to be seated within the recesses of the side bars.

In the following specification I have entered into a detail description of the invention, ref; erence being had to the accompanying drawings and to numerals thereon, which designate the different parts, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are specifically set forth in the claim.

In connection with a frame constructed as he'reinbefore described I provide a plate 2 independent therefrom and consisting of the cross-bar 8, adapted to extend across the frame and fit within the recesses 7 7 in the side bars thereof, a tongue projecting from the central portion of the bar 8 of a length to engage the recess 6 of the cross-bar 4 of the rectangular frame when the plate is placed in engagewent herew th- In the application of my invention the ends of the straps are passed upward through the frame, and the tongue 9 of the plate 2 is passed through apertures therein to engage the recess 6 of the cross-bar 4, after which the straps are passed over the cross-bar and down through the frame. Then by pulling. upon the strap the plate will be brought into the recesses 7 and hold the tongue in positive engagement with the recess 6. This provides a buckle very similar to one of ordinary construction, with the exception that the plate is separable from the rectangular frame and the latter recessed to receive the same. One of the advantages of a buckle of this construction is that the tongue is held in positive engagement with the rectangular frame and being passed through the strap will hold the same securely, therebeing no chance of the end of thetongue slipping out of the perforations in the straps. Therefore the particular construction of the buckle provides one that is especially adapted for connecting straps to each other Without liability of their slipping after being applied to the buckle. When the plate is in engagement with the rectanguthe inner side of one of the end cross-bars and recesses in the side bars near the opposite cross-bar, the latter being disposed at an inelination with respect to the frame, as shown; together with an independent plate presenting a cross-bar which engages the recesses in the side bars of the frame and a central tongue which engages the recess in the end cross-bar, the parts being placed in engagement with the straps, substantially as herein shown and I0 described.
