When'the sofa-bed is to bepused as a bed,

one or both side pieces are removed, the fold- -ing mattress taken out of the -recess of the back, opened out, and placed onthe seat-sec tion. The drawer is then pulled forward, the sheets, blankets, dac., removed from the same v -the lower part of the back Fand firmly held and arranged on the mattress-section, after which the structure is in the shape of a bed ready to receive the person that is desirous of resting thereon. As the construction of the sofa-bed dill'ers but little from the ordinary sofa, all that is required being the additional folding mattress and the detachability of the side pieces, the sofa can be manufactured at little extra cost and forms a Very convenient piece of furniture for family use, especially as the change from sofa to bed, and vice versa, can be made with great facility, al1 the parts being within convenient reach and arranged quickly for either purpose.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a main frame, having an upholstered seat-section and flattened portions at its ends, sido pieces having flat bottoms and provided with recesses at the inner corners of the rear ends, means for connecting said side pieces with the ends of the main frame, a back upholstered at its upper part and along a portion of its sides and provided with a recessed lower part, and a folding mattress-section, the ends of which are inserted in the corner recesses of the side pieces, whereby said lnattressscction is retainediu the recessed lower part of the back, substantially as set forth.
