Description

QN@ Model.) 4 Sheets-Shet 3. S. STUBGIS. DUMPING WAGON.
atented May 24,1898.
Feroe,
SEEGCFICAMGN iorinng pert of Letters Petent No. 604,64@ dated May 24, 1898.
' Applies@ meer December 31,1897. sel-inno. 665,033. or@ man.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it 'known that i, SAMUEL STURGIS, e oiti- Zen of the 'United States, residingy et West liifnneynnli, Pennsylvanie, have invented eertftin improvements in Dnmpingiingons, of firiiioh. the oliowing; is n, specification. y
The object' of my invention is to oonstrnet dnniping--Wegon having but few` operetive parte, 'but eepeble oi' dumping either before, behind, or on either side, en objeet which l nttnin in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the eeooinpnn ying: iirnwings, in Wliiol1V V Figure 1 is esideview of e dumping-Wegen eonstrnoted in ne'eordenee with my invention, showing the body lowered Eig. 2 is t si1niier View showing the-body resed. 3 is e plain er top View-With the `body removed,
*- end Fig. li' is eJ rear View showing the body adjusted so es to dump sidewise.
The running-gear ineybe similar te 'that oi any ordinary Wagon, and hence will require no description. l
Esch of the side sills 1 of v the truck oon-y siitntes :trail for the gnidenoe of e pnir oi shoes i?, to enob of whieh is pivoted elet/er 3, these leverfftiiem'ing et their inner ends ooin eident eyes, which receive the opposite ends of e, bei' Li, extending trensyerseiy noross the Wngon-'rnineirom one prir of levers 3 to the other, es shown in Fig. 2.
Seonred to, the bnr i is the lower ring 5 of e turn-table, seid ring 5 supporting en upper ring 6, which is snitnbij,xr .ffaeeured to the body i?" oi the Wagon, n oentrnfl king-bolt 9 or other eyeilnbie ineens being employed for contining; the ripper d lower 'ings of the inrnteble togethe, ni preservi g their eoneentri ity..
To snitnble boi-tri e on the opposite side sills 1 of the truolzeine are adapted two shafts 10 and 11, ind to n bearing on one of v the side siils is also adapted n short shaft 12,1
this letter shzii't having; n pinion 13, which meshes with :t spur-Wheel 14, secured upon the shaft 10, sind also with n spur-Wheel 1e,
` mounted npon theshnit 11 in sneh manner theft it een be moved longitudinally thereon, so ifiintit be thrown into or ont of mesh Wit the pinion 13. Detente or pewls 16 and 17, e ving; with the spur-Wheels 11i and 15,
21 to tbe shaft 10, so that when seid shziit -is nrned forimrdiy eeoli of the ehnins Will be vonnd thereupon, end in like manner the ,Wagon ere connected by chains 'to the -`nat 'll in snoli manner that When the letter is turned forwardly the chains will be Wound thereupon.
The forenndmft central portions of the turn-table rin g 5 are Connected, respectively, byvehains 23 and 24 to Aeonioeil drums 25 end 2G on the shafts 10 and 11, the 'chains being so Wound upon these drums that es the chains 21 and 22 are Wound upon the shafts the chains 23 end 24: will be nnwonnd from the dro. m5,'
and vioe Verse.
,The upper ends theolinins 23 24 are eo'nneeted to the iower ring` 5 of the turn-table by ineens of hooks or other readily-detachable festenings, so that either chain may be readily disconnected from the ring` when eireuinstanees require such disconnection.
Normally-that is to say, when the e" is being,` loaded or drawn freni place to p the chains 21 end 22 are nnwound iF shafts 10 end 11 and the chains Wound on the drums 26 end 27, the being fully extended and the ".ifn-gonJwdy resting npon the sills.
.'When it is desired to discharge the leed,
the shaft 12 is turned by Ineens of a suitable operating-handle, so es to Wind up the Chains 21 and 22 on the shafts 10 and 11 and unwind the Chains 23 and 24 from the drums 26 and 27, the shoes 2 of the levers 3 being drawn toward eeen other 4and the Cent-rel portions -ofvseid levers being thereby ceased to rise,
carrying with them the turn-teble 5 end the Wagon-body mounted thereupon,
if itis desired to dump et the reef; the front o 't erins of the levers on the other sido ot' chain 23 is unhooked before turning the shafts 10 and 11, so that as the bar4 is raised by the levers 3 the turn-table can tip rearwardly, the rear portion of the body remaining on-the sills, and in like manner if it is. desired to dump at the front end the rear chain 24- is unhooked before operating the shafts l and 11, so that theturn-table can tip forwardly.
If a side dump is required, the .wagon-body is first lifted horizontally by winding lup the chains upon both the shaftslt) and l1 until said wagon-body is clearof. the wheels, whereupon it can be swung around into position across the truck so as to discharge either to the right orto the left, and the pair of levers which are then under the forward portion of the turn-table can be lifted by operating the shaft controlling said levers, the shaft being operated through the medium of the shaft 12 'af- 5o for drawing the lowenends of the toggle-le'- tei-first moving the spur-wheel l5 out of mesh with the pinion 13 or the shaft 1l being op.
erated by means of a handle applied to the end of the same after lthe spur-Wheel l5 has in Iikemanner been lmoved out of gear.
In effecting a side dump the turn-table as] it rises is maintained inthe horizontal position by the chains 23 and 24,V the latter being delivered evenly and in proportion to the rising movement of the turn-table owing to the use of the conical drn ms 25 and 26, as the rising movement of the body is much greater in proportion to the winding up vofthe chains 2l and 22 andthe longitudinal movement of the shoes 2 during the earlier portion of the lift than whenthe levers assume a graduallyincreasing angle in respect to each other;
The. chainsV 21 and 22 may, ifl desired, be connected to the slides 2 instead of'tolthe short arms of .the levers, the latter i-n -such case being dispensed with. The construction shown is, however, preferred.
Having thus described. my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-l ent- l.' The combination of the yrunning-gear of a Wagon, opposite pairs of toggle=levers thereon, a turn-table carried by the meeting ends of said toggle-levers, a wagon-body mounted so as to turn on said turn-table, and provision levers, a wagon-,body mounted upon said turn-l table so as to befr'ee to turn thereon, and
.winding-shafts having draft-chains, those of one shaft operating one pair of toggle-levers and those of the other shaft operating the other pair of toggle-levers, substantially as specified.
3. The combination ofthe running-gear of a wagon, opposite pairs of toggle-levers, a
turn-table carried by the meeting ends of said pairs of levers, a wagon-body free to turnon said turn-table, afpair of winding-shafts,
draft-chains whereby each'shaft is'caused to operate its respectivepair of vtoggle-levers,
'and slides guided on the sills vof the truck and carrying'the outer ends of. said togg'iev levers, 'substantial1y as specified.
,4. The combination' of the vtruck and its running-gear,'oppositepairs of toggle-levers, a turn-table carried by the meeting ends of saidlevers, a Wagon-body-free to turn on said turn-table, winding-shafts each having draftchains operating its. respective pair of togglelevers', cone-drums on said shafts, and staychains leading from said cone-drums to the fore-and-aft portions of the turn-table, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the truck audits atturn-table carried by themeetingendsof -said'levers, a wagon-body free to turn on said running-gear, opposite pairs of ,toggle-levers,
turn-table, a`pair of winding-shafts each having draft-chains operating'its respective pair of toggle-levers, and provision for operating said winding-shafts either simultaneously or separately, substantially as specified.
1n testimony whereof I have.` signed my name to this specification in the 'presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
