To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN B. EORD, of Creighton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in en teda new and useful Improvemengn lombstones, of which the a I --follon:ing.is-a'full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved tombstone, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
My invention relates to artificial tombstones, and is designed to provide a monument or tombstone which shall be practically indestructible and which can be'easily made at comparatively small cost, while presenting a neat and ornamental appearance.
In the drawings, 2 represents a hollow tombstone open at its lower end and composed of porcelain. In a tombstone of, say, six inches in width I preferably make each side about an inch thick, leaving about a four-inch space between them. After the porcelain is fired I fill the cavity in the same with an artificial concrete 3, which will solidify and harden in place, thus making the tombstone a practically solid body.
The inscription is formed upon a separate porcelain panel which fits in an opening in the face of the tombstone and is preferably provided with a surrounding rib fitting into a recess in the wall of the opening, forming a rabbeted joint, as shown in Fig. 2. This panel is inserted from the inside and the filling of concrete contacts with and holds it in is afforded at comparatively small cost and which presents a very attractive appearance.
Many changes in the shape and dimensions of the tombstone, as Well as in the filling material, may be made without departing from my invention, since I claim 1. A hollow porcelain tombstone having an opening in one face, a panel fitting in said opening and having a rib or projection fitting in a recess in the wall of the opening so as to prevent outward movement, and a filling of concrete or cement which contacts with and secures the panel in place.
2. A hollow porcelain tombstone having an opening in one face, a panel fitting in said opening and having a projection fitting in a recess in the wall of the opening to prevent outward movement, the outer face of the panel being flush with the face of the stone, and a filling of concrete or cement which contacts with and secures the panel in place.
