AC'ETYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,140, dated May 17, 1898. Application filed October 80,1897. Serial No. 656,893. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: is arranged the water-spray pipe K, which Be it known that I, EDWARD J. DOLAN, of may be, if desired, provided with governor the city and county of Philadelphia, in the M, allowing the water to enter only when the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new gas-pressure becomes reduced below the de- 5 and useful Improvement in Gas-Generators, termined point. This governor may be of of which the following is a full, true, and eX- any known construction, of which many are act description, reference being had to the in use. Above the pipe K is the shield L, accompanying drawings. which, as shown, is in longitudinal section an This invention relates to an improved genarc of a circle and which serves the double 1o orator for generating gas, and especially repurpose of protecting the jet-pipe K from lates to that class of generators in which the the falling fragments of carbid and of guidgas is produced by the union of a liquid and ingthe carbid into the openings of the troughs a solidsuch, for instance, as acetylene-gas or guides G. Its operation will be readily generators. I seen in Fig. 3. The bottom of the vessel A r 5 The invention is especially designed to inis provided with a manhole H for removing crease the capacity of that class of generator the waste material. The gas-outlet J, located in whichthe liquid, as water, is sprayed upon in the upper part of the chamber, may be a mass of carbid of calcium, which is caused provided with an automatic governor N, dcto be revolved or moved beneath the spray, termining the gas-pressure which shall pass 20 so that the refuse material can fall from such outside of the apparatus into the servicecarbid and rest in another portion of the repipes. ceptacle. The operation of my apparatus, which is My invention will be readily understood simple, may nowbereadilyunderstood. The from the accompanying drawings, in which carbid is placed in the chamber A, as shown 25 Figure 1 represents a longitudinal view, in Fig. 3. Water is allowed to enter, as departly in section, of my device; Fig. 2, a sired, or its delivery is automatically contransverse section through Fig. 1 on the line trolled through the pipe K. This generates a: a; Fig 3, the same View as Fig. 1, showing gas by attacking the carbid within'the cage the generator charged and in operation; and F. At intervals the cage is revolved and the 0 Fig. 4:, an outside elevation of the basket refuse lime is caused to fall through its open moving mechanism. grating, as shown in Fig. 3. It may be re- A represents a chamber which may be of moved at intervals, as desired, through the any suitable size or construction. It conmanhole H. The generated gas pass-es uptains a chargingopening B, through which ward through the body of carbid above the 3 5 material, as carbid, may be supplied. The water-jet and is thereby dried. As the carbid various openings through the chamber A are is consumedin the revolving cage fresh carbid of course provided with gas-tight gaskets or is automatically fed into the end of that cage stuifing-boxes. Toward the lower part of by gravity. the chamber A is arranged ahorizontal shaft What I claim as my'invent-iom'and desire o 40 C, suitably journaled, which may be turned to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Above the cage E ing a gas-producing material into it, said means in connection with said protective casing forming a chamber for the gas-producing material, a spraying device intermediate the cage and protective casing and a gas-out1et at the upper end of said casing, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination in a gas-generator, of a suitable casing provided with a chargingopening at its upper portion and a manhole at its lower portion, a cage provided with open ends journaled in said casing, means in connection with said cage for revolving it, a protective casing over said cage, a guide for each of said open ends, said guides and casing forming a division forsaid casing,a spraying device intermediate the protective casing and cage, and a gas-outlet at the upper end of the casing, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
