Be it known that I, JOHN BRENGMAN, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Florissant, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in nut-locks, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective means for securely looking a nut to a bolt'at any desired point thereon and to permit of its easy removal or adjustment when so desired.
It consists of a nut having a hole therein, the walls converging toward each other from one endto the other, one of the walls being broken away to connect the hole with the bore of the nut, and a tapering key fitting said hole and projecting through the opening therein into said bore, said key adapted to rest and be wedged between the sides of the screw-threads on the bolt, or it may rest and be wedged on top of the screw-threads.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a cross-section on the line :0 m, Fig, 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line y y, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detail perspective of the key, and Fig. 5 a similar View showing a modified form.
In the drawings, in'which like letters of reference denote like parts, A designates a bolt, and a screw-threads thereon.
B is a nut; 19, the screw-threaded bore thereof; b, a hole cut or formed diagonally across the nut, the walls of which converge longitudinally from one end to the other and also laterally toward the bore of the nut; 6 an opening in one of the walls of the hole 1), connecting the hole I) with the bore b.
C is a key made tapering longitudinally from one end to the other and also laterally from one side to the other, so as to fit the hole I), and provided with a toothed or ser rated portion 0, projecting through the opening 12 into the bore of the nut and adapted to rest and be wedged on or between the screwthreads a on the bolt.
The key C has its smaller end turned over or formed with an enlargement 0', so as to prevent it from slipping out, but allowing of a slight back-and-forward movement of the same. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the key is made tapering, but the saw-toothed projections are omitted.
Although I have shown and described the key-opening formed across one of the corners of the nut, it may be, if desired, formed parallel with one of the flat sides with the same effect.
In use the nut is first screwed onto the bolt A to the desired point. Then the key C is inserted in the opening I) of the nut and pushed inward until the toothed or serrated wedgeshaped edge 0 seats itself on the screw-threads or between two of the screw-threads of the said bolt. Then if the nut is turned in one direction the friction of the bolt on the key will drive the key outwardtoward the larger end of the opening, and the key thus resting lightly between the screw-threads on the bolt will offer no resistance to the turning of the nut; but if the nut be turned in the opposite direction it will drive the key toward the smaller end of the opening I) and by reason of its being wedge-shaped will be tightly wedged in the said opening and between the screw-threads of the bolt and thus lock the bolt securely.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1., A screw-bolt provided with a nut having an opening therein the walls of which converge longitudinally, and also laterally toward the bore of said nut, in combination with a key also tapering longitudinally and laterally adapted to be inserted within said opening and be wedged between and against the sides of the screw-threads of said bolt, substantially as described.
2. A screw-bolt provided with a nut hav ing an opening provided with a longitudinally and laterally tapering key therein, the inner face of which is plane and provided with engaging edges adapted to be wedged between and against the sides of the screw- IO to provide serrated engaging edges, said key adapted to be inserted within the said opening in the nut and be wedged between and against the sides of the screw-threads of the bolt, substantially as described.
