G L WISER JOINT FOR RIMS OF VEHICLE WHEELS.
No. 601,925. Patented Apr. 5, 1898.

U TED STATES PATENT rnrcn.
'GEORGE LEWISWVISER, 0F PLYMOUTH, INDIANA.
JOINT FOR RIMS OF'VEHlCLE-WHEELS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,925, dated April 5, 1898. Application filed November 8, 1897. $erial No. 657,763. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,GEORGE Lnwrs WISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Marshall and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Rims of Vehicle-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.'
The present invention has for its object to provide'a strong and durable joint for the rims of vehicle-wheels and for other purposes; and the invention consists in a joint constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described andclaimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the two meeting ends of the rim of a vehicle-wheel, showing them held together by my improved joint. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a detail sectional View taken on line 00a; of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detached perspective view of one of the jointed ends of the rim.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent the two meeting ends of the rim of avehicle or other wheel, which are of wood or other preferred material and in the present instance formed concavo-convex in cross-section.
The two sections or ends A 13 are each formed with a tongue a, having the three angles 1) ad," this tongue being at the extremity of the rimsection. Adjacent to this tongue at is formed a notched seat e, having the angles f g h, to correspond with the angles b c d of the tongue at, said tongue nicely fitting in the notched seat, as shown inFigs. l and 2 of the drawings. The Walls formed by the angles fare of sufficient length so that when the ends of the two rim-sections A B are fitted together a space or opening will be left for the reception of a tapering key 0, which firmly locks the ends together and prevents them working loose. In driving the key 0 to its place the taper of the key, in addition to its having flat sides, will draw the joint together and form a very strong and rigid joint between the two ends of the rim sections. The several angles of the tongue and notched seat, which engage with each other, form what I term a boxjoint, diifering from the usual dovetail joint,
one-half of the joint in my invention locking past the other half, the several angles of the tongue and notched seat admitting of this feature of the invention, which is essential to obtain a strong and durable joint. The shoulder 1' upon the inner end of the tongue a, in
of material importance in drawing together the ends of the rim-sections to form a perfectly rigid joint, the fiat-sided key acting more perfectly than the usual round key and holds the parts more firmly together.
The joint may be applied forany purpose to which it may be found useful.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A joint for the rims of vehicle-Wheels or for 7 5 vother purposes, the meeting ends of sections thereof formed with a tongue having the three angles Z) c d and the shoulder i, and the notched seat having the angles f g hwith which the tongue of the adjacent section engages as shown, and a fiat-sided tapering key inserted between the tongues, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. GEORGE LEWIS WISER.
Witnesses:
' ELDRIDGE THoMPsoN,
JOHN ED. BERGMAN.
