SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,557, dated March 29, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AOQB Donna, of Pinckneyville, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Rollin g or Unrolling Barbed WVire; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention is an improvement in reels for use in building and repairing wire fences,

the object of the invention being to provide a reel and a supporting-frame therefor which shall be light and durable in construction and render effective service in paying out the wire and stretching the same in building the fence and also employed for rewinding the wire in moving the fence from one place to another. Tothe above ends the invention consists in a rectangular frame consisting of side bars and end cross-bars, supporting-Wheels journaled in bearings at the rear ends of the side bars, uprights extending from the side bars and braced to each other and to said side bars, and a reel supported in bearings in said uprights, together with a removable bar or tiebar at the forward end of the frame, as will be hereinafter fully described, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.

The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and specifically claimed.

At this end of the frame are the upright posts 7, connected at their upper ends by the cross-piece 8, and which are braced by the inclined braces 9, extending between said posts 7 and side pieces 2. Mounted upon the posts 7 and near the upper ends thereof are the bearings 10, comprising hooks 11, having screw-threaded pins 12, that extend through the post and are adapted to be held in position by the wingnuts 13, that bear against the rear face of the post. Mounted within the bearings 10 is a movable shaft 14, having one end prepared to receive a crank 15, while near the crankhead of the shaft is a cross-head 16, having inwardly-extending lugs 17. This head 16 is fastened permanently to the shaft, and the other end of the shaft is provided with a removable cross-head 18, having lugs 19, said cross-head 18 being adapted to be secured against rotation with relation to the shaft by means of a pin 20, that extends through an opening 21 in the shaft and through notches 22 in the rearWardly-sleeved portion 23, of said cross-head 18. lower end portion of said post 7 are the deflecting-arms 24, that extend upwardly and are curved inwardly and forwardly, as shown, the upper end portions 25 being approximately straight and situated so that they stand about opposite the edges of the sides of a wire-spool that is held upon the shaft. The wire-spool is indicated by 26, and is of ordinary construction, and is held firmly upon the shaft between the cross-heads 16 and 18 and against rotation by the lugs 17 and 19.

Mounted upon the side pieces 2 and in the rear of the post is a shaft 27, carrying a winding-drum 28, the ends of said shaft being squared to receive a crank 15. Ratchet: wheels 29 are mounted upon the shaft at each end thereof to be engaged by the ratohets 30, it being noted that the teeth of the ratchet- .wheels face in opposite directions for obvious reasons. The shaft 14 is also provided with a ratchet-wheel 31 near the crank end thereof to be engaged by a ratchet 32 upon the post.

In operation when it is desired to unreel the spool of wire said spool is placed upon the shaft 14 by first loosening the bearings 10 to permit one shaft to be removed to receive the spool, after which the parts are replaced in the position shown in the drawings. The end of the wire is then secured to the fence-post rods or chains to another post or suitably an- Secured to the chored and the wire hooked upon the projections 33 of the drum 28. The crank is then employed to turn the drum and to wind the wire thereon, so as to stretch it taut across the intervening posts. The wire is then secured to the last post, and the machine can proceed, as before, in the opposite direction. It is noted that by lowering the outer ends of the side pieces 2 the distance between the spool and the ground can be varied according to the height to which it is desired to attach the wire to the post. In winding the wire upon the spool an empty spool is placed upon the shaft and the latter turned by the crank, while an attendant wheels the reel as the wire is wound. It is noted that the defleeting-arms 24 serve to direct the Wire as it is wound or unwound upon the spool.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that an inexpensive machine is provided which is of simple and durable construction and which is equally useful in building, repairing, or removing a wire fence.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a frame having upright posts at one end thereof, of bearings upon said post, a shaft removably secured within said bearings and provided with de vices for holding a spool thereon, deflectingarms secured to said post and having their outer ends situated opposite the sides of the spool, and a winding-drum upon said frame provided with means for attaching the wire thereto.

2. The combination with a frame provided with the wheels at one end thereof, of upright posts adjacent to said wheels, bearings near the upper end of said posts comprising hooks at The outer end of screw-threaded pins that pass through openings in said posts and are provided with wing-nuts, a shaft mounted in said bearings and provided at one end with a permanent cross-head having inwardly-extending lugs, a removable cross-head at the other end of said shaft having the notches at its rear end, an opening in said shaft, a pin passing through said opening in the shaft and said notches, a ratchet upon one of the posts, deflecting-arms secured to the lower end portions of said posts and extending inwardly, forwardly and upwardly and having their upper end portions situated opposite the sides of the spool to be carried by said shaft, and a winding-drum mounted upon said frame and provided with a projection and with ratchet- Wheels and ratchets to control the rotation thereof.
