VICTOR M. FOWLER, OF ACTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,509, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed May 27, 1897. Serial No. 638,332.- (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR M. FowLER, of South Acton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a knife of simple and comparatively cheap construction and of the class employed for slicing bread, cake, and the like, or paring vegetables or fruit.
I will describe a knife embodying my in'- vention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the guide-arm removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guide-arm. Fig. 4
isa perspective view of theimprovement with the handle and guide-arm removed. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
The improved knife, as illustrated in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, is provided with a knifeblade A, secured to the frame'B, attached to the handle C in any suitable manner, and on the frame B is formed a transversely-extending guideway B', adapted to receive the correspondingly-shaped head D 0f a guide-arm one of said lugs beinginteriorly screw-thread-- ed.. The outer end of the screw-rod F is preferably formed with a handle and is adapted to be turned by the operator, so as to move the plate E in or out of engagement with the head D to lock or unlock the latter.
Now it will be seen by reference to Fig. 1
that the lower edge of the guide-arm D extends a short distance below the cutting edge of the knife-blade A, so that this guide-arm can be placed with its inner face against the face of the bread or other article to be sliced to guide the knife-edge through the bread, so as to cut a slice of the thickness corresponding to the distance between the arm and the knife-blade A.
As shown in Fig. 1, the guide-arm D is of a length corresponding to that of the knifeblade A; but, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the guide-arm D2 is made shorter than the knife-blade A, secured to the frame B3, in which screws the screw-rod F for moving the locking-plate E2 in or out of engagement with the head D3 of 'the guide-arm D2 to lock or unlock the latter in or from the guideway B4.
By the arrangement described the outer end of the knife-blade A can be readily used for paring purposes; also, for coring and quartering apples and other fruits, vegetables, and the like.
By unsorewing the screw-rod F or F the guide-arm D or D2 may be readily unlocked to permit of removing it from the guideway, so as to allow of using'the knife the same as ordinary knives. y
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a knife, a handle, a frame attached thereto, a blade extended from the frame, a guideway extended transversely of the frame, a guide-arm having a head movable in the guideway, a locking-plate in the guideway and engaging with the head of the guide-arm, and clamping means for said plate, substantially as specified.
2. In a knife, a handle, a frame attached thereto, a blade extended from the frame, a guideway extended transversely of the frame,
`a guide-arm having a head movable in the guideway, a locking-plate in the guideway and engagingwith the head of the guide-arm, and a screw-rod passing through a tapped lug on the frame and engaging in a Asocket on the locking-plate, substantially as specified.'
' VICTOR M. FOWLER.
