ATENT EFIcE.
EMMA L. ABEL, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
ORNAMENTAL TOP FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,31 1, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed April 26, 8 9 7.
Be it known that I, EMMA L. AB L, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State-of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Tops for Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an ornamental top for cooking-stoves that can be readily removed and folded to occupy but a minimum space when not in use. The device is'intended for use by those who live in tenement-houses and are compelled from circumstances to make a single room answer as kitchen, sitting-room, and dining-room, and in some instances as a bed-room. In such case the ordinary cooking-stove makes a very unsightly appearance with its flat top, the surface of which is broken by lids, and noticing the demand for a cover that could be effectually applied to an ordinary cookingstove and greatly add to its appearance I have devised such a contrivanc'e that besides answering the purpose hereinbefore mentioned possesses the additional advantage of being cheaply manufactured and sold at a minimum price. The particular construction of the appliance provides for its being made a permanent fixture upon the stove when so desired, and for this purpose comprises a series ofsections hinged to'each bther, the sections being secured by a hinged cap.
In the following specification I have entered into a detailed description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals thereon, which designate the difierent parts, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are specifically set forth-in the claims.
Serial No. 633,948. (No model.)
designates the back section of my improved top or cover, to which are either hinged or formed integral the side pieces 2 2, and to the forward edges of these side pieces are hinged the sections 3 and 4, which form the front of the cover. 1 'It will be noticed that the plates forming the back, sides, and front are tapered upward to present a pyramidal-shaped'structure, and the said plates are stamped, cast, or otherwise formed to make an ornamental appearance and are finished off in any suitable metal that is not likely to become tarnished, the style being varied to correspond with the cost of the article. The upper end of the appliance is closed by a cap'5, finished off in any suitable design, presenting a knob 6, and this cap is hinged to the upper edge of the back 1 and presents side flanges and a front flange which embrace the upper edges of the side and front sections to hold the hinged front sections closed when desired. The lower edges of the device may be provided with depending lugs 7, by which it is placed in positive engagement with the top of the ordinary cookin g-stove,engagin g suitable openings therein.
1 have described the improved ornamental fopor cover as consisting in part of the back and side pieces formed integral with each other; but it is apparent that in case it'is desired to have the sections folded one upon the other and removed from the stove the said ornamental top, and in opening the doors or sections of the front the cap is tilted up upon its hinges, so that the fianges at the forward end thereof will release the said doors. I
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will v be seen that I provide a cheap and'effective device for adding to the appearance of an ordinary cooking-stove, the said device not interfering with the operation of cooking, but acting to change the plain character of the stove to one of an ornamental design.
I It will be understood, of course, that the shape or configuration of the sections which make up the cover, with a corresponding change in the cap that fits over the sections, could be made without materially affecting the purpose of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the particular construction shown and described, but reserve the right to modify or change the same within the spirit or scope of my claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. An ornamental top for cooking-stoves comprising several sections connected to each other and tapering upward in pyramidal shape, and a cap hinged to one of the sections and overlapping the others, substantiall y as, and for the purposes set forth.
