Description

0. J. CONLON. FASTENING DEVICE FOR HINGES.
(No Model.)
Patented Mar. 29, 1898.
W/TNESSIS; 6 449 2 z UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
CHRISTOPHER J. OONLON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR HINGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601 ,241, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed June 11, 1897. Serial No. 640,312. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER J. CON- LON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices or Locks for Hinges, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for the hinges of window-shutters; and the object thereof is to provide the hinge of a shutter with a lock or fastening device by means of which theshutter will be securely held in place on its hinge and cannot be blown off or removed without first removing the attachment or look. v
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of 'one side of a window-frame and of a portion of a shutter the hinge of which is provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the hinge which Iemploy.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 one side of a window-frame and at 6 apart of a window-shutter, and in the practice of my invention I provide a hinge of the ordinary form, which consists of two'parts, one of which is adapted to be connected with the frame of the window and the other with the shutter.
That part of the hinge which is adapted to be connected with the frame of the window? consists of a plate 5, which is provided with an outwardly-directed arm 6, and that part of the hinge which is adapted to be connected with the shutter consists of a plate 8, which is provided with an outwardly-directed arm 9, and the hinge-pin is secured in or formed on the cylindrical head 10 of the arm 6 in the usual manner, while the arm 9 of the plate 8 is provided with a tubular head 11, through which said hinge-pin passes.
. This hinge-pin is shown at 12 in Fig. 1, and 5o formed into a ring or head 15, which projects over the upper end of the hinge-pin and over a the tubular head 11 on the arm 9, through which the hinge-pin passes.
The hin ge-pin may extend through the head 15 of the lock or fastening device, if desired, and by means of this device the shutter will be securely held in place and the separate parts ofthe hinge cannot be separated, and said shutter cannot be blown off or accidentally detached.
This device may be secured to the hinges of a gate or a door as well as to the-hinge of window-shutter, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent- .,The combination with a hinge of the character described, of a spring-wire lock or fastening device 13 formed into a 'coil 14:, and the upper end of which is formed into a ring or head 15, adapted to project over the head of the hinge-pin and over the tubular head of the opposite arm of the hinge through which the said hinge-pin passes, said spring-wire being secured at the lower end to the arm 6 of the stationary hinge, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of June, 1897.
OHRISTOPHER'J. OONLON.
