Ninn STATES PATnNT FFICI@ GIVEN J. NUGENT, OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,454, dated February 22, 1898.
Application led April 9, 1897. Serial No. 631,442. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN J. NUGENT, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vents for Preserving Fermented Liquors, of which the following is a specicatiomreference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vents, and more particularly to self-actuated vents adapted to be used in connection with casks containing fermented liquors in order to preserve the con tents.
The object of my invention is to provide a self-actuated vent to be attached to casks containing fermented liquors, which is to be interposed between the casks and an air-pump to supply air to the cask and to prevent the escape of the gas and the volatile flavoring of the beer or any other fermented liquor.
IV ith these objects in view my invention consists in the particular construction of the Various parts and in the novel manner of combination or arrangement of said parts, all of which will be described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming apart of this specification, Figure l is a View showing my invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of all the parts in place.
My invention consists of a cylindrical vessel or cup A, interposed between a cask containing fermented liquors, and an air-pump of any construction desired and connected to the same by suitable flexible tubes. The cup is adapted to receive a screw-cap B, provided with a T-shaped knob on the top thereof, the base of which is sufficiently large to admit of two channels C and D, vertically arranged within the knob and parallel with respect to each other. The top of the knob is semicircular, and the projecting arms, which form the T, are cylindrical and provided upon their exterior with grooves E, in which are secured the flexible tubes. These arms are also provided with channels arranged in a line with each other and connecting, respectively, at
right angles the channels C and D. On the 5o interior of the cup is a raised portion F, which forms between itself and the rim of the cup a groove G for the reception of a suitable packing. The channels C and D are continued through this raised portion, and the channel O is prolonged by the cylindrical tube H, which projects in a line with the said channel to a short distance .from the bottom of the cup and is provided upon its exterior with a groove for the reception of the vent I, which is made of rubber in the form of a tube closed at one 'end and having a slit in the side thereof. If desired, the ordinary form of vent which is now commonly used may be employed, and either may be secured in any manner desired.
In using my invention the cup is partially filled with water. The cup is then placed on and the tube I-I, which supports the vent, is immersed within the water, thus keeping the vent always moist and flexible and in a closed position. Should the water fall below the outlet of the vent, it will be kept in the same condition by the splash of the water. The channel C is connected by a flexible tube to an air-pump and the channel D is also connected by a flexible tube to a hollow plug adapted to be driven into the vent or spigot-bung. The air is forced into the cask by the pump and secured therein by means of myimproved vent.
It will thus be seen that l provide a vent which is exceedingly cheap and simple in its construction and will prociently perform all of its intended functions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a vent, the combination of acylindrical vessel or cup having a screw-cap, the said cap provided with a T-shaped knob, which provides means for tightening or untightening the same upon the cup, channels arranged within the said knob, and cap, the said channels opening into the cup and having their outlets in opposite directions, a raised portion on the interior of the said cap, the said raised portion forming between itself and the rim or threaded portion of the oep, a groove, In testimony whereof I afx my signature said groove adapted to receive asuitable paokin presence of two Witnesses. ing, a nipple mounted upon the said raised portion, the said nipple adapted to prolongate OWEN J NUGENT' 5 one of the channels and to receive e slitted Witnesses:
