-' E; BURCH-1R.
SGUTTLE DOOR.
\No. 598,975. Patented Feb. 15, 1898.
I ENTUH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL BURGER, on NEW YORK, N.1Y.
SCUTTLE-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,975, dated February 15, 1898. I
Application filed March 9, 1897- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL BURGER, acitizen of the United fitates, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scuttle-Doors, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to scuttle-doors for cellars; and the object thereof is to provide an improved door for scuttle-holes and improved means for opening and closing the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a sectionalview of my improvement, showing the door in different positions;
and Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a plate or cover such as is usually employed in cellar-doors or openings in pavements and for similar purposes, and said plate is provided with an opening 6, which is provided with an upwardly-directed rim or flange-7, and hinged at one side of the said rim or flange 7 is a door 8, which is provided with a depending rim or flange 9, which is adapted to overlap and inclose the rim or flange 70f the'plate 5, and secured to the bottom of said door opposite the hinge thereof and'adjacent to the rim or flange 9 is a curved spring-arm 10, which passes through a keeper 11,- secured to said rim or flange 7, and secured to said rim or flange and projecting into said keeper is a pin 12, which is adapted to pass through holes 13, formed in said spring-arm. I also secure to the bottom of the plate 5, preferably beneath the hinge of the door 8, a pulley 14, and a corresponding pulley 15 is secured-to the side wall of the opening 6 adjacent to one side of the keeper 11, and secured to the bottom of the spring-arm 10, as shown at 16 in Fig. 2, are two ropes or cords 17, oneof which is passed over the pulley 15 and the other over the pulley 14, and the operation will be read- Sarial No. 626,575. (No model.)
ily understood from the foregoingdescription when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The door 8 maybe held in the raised position, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of the spring-arm 10 and the pin 12,which is adapted to pass through one of the openings 13, formed in said springarm, or said door may be locked in the closed position by the same device, and in raising and lowering the door it is only necessary to pull on the ropes or cords 17, a pull on the rope or cord which passes over the pulley 14 serving to disconnect the springarm from the pin 12, while a pull on both cords or ropes after this'disconnection has been made will raise the door 8 into the position shown in Fig. 1. I
It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of devices which-are simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which they are intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departingfrom the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. It will also be apparent that this device may be used in connection with doors or coverings for skylights and for various other and similar purposes; and,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described scuttle-door comprising a door 8, hinged at one side thereof to a suitable support, a spring-arm 10, secured to the under surface of said door adjacent to the side opposite to the hinged connection of the same, akeeper 11 mounted on the inner wall of the opening which the said door is adapted to close, a pin 12 mounted in the wall of said opening and within said keeper, said springarm being provided with a plurality of openings 13 with which said pin is adapted-to successively engage, a pulley 14 mounted on said support beneath said door, a cord mounted on said pulley and secured at one end to'the said spring-arm 10, whereby the same may be disengaged from the said pin 12, a second I00 pulley 15 mounted on the inner Wall of said my inventionIhave signed my name, in presopening adjacent to said keeper 11, and a enee of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th cord mounted on the same and also secured day of March, 1897. to the lower end of said spring-arm and EMIL BURGER.
5 adapted to raise or lower the said door, sub- Witnesses:
stantially as and for the purpose described. 0. GERST,
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing as S. L. HAWKSHURST.
