SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,595, dated February 8, 1898.. Application filed September 27, 1897. Serial No. 653,250. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JEPHsoN'JosEPH GoN- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rowlocks, of which f .the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates tol rowlocks for rowboats; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple4 in construction and operation and provided with improved means for securing it to the gunwale of a boat.

The invention is fully disclosed iu the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side View of a part of one side of aboat and showing my improved rowlock connected therewith, part of the construction being shown in section; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, part of the construction being shown in section and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 S of Fig. l.

In the drawings forming part of this speciiication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a part of the side of a boat, at 6 the gunwale thereof, and at 7 the wash-strip, and these parts run the full length of each side of the boat, as will be readily understood, and placed outside of the top of the boat is the usual molding-strip 4.

Myilnproved rowlock is U-shaped in form, as shown at 8, and is countersunk in the wash-strip '7, and the sides thereof are provided at the top with outwardlydirected flanges 9, countersunk in the top of the washstrip 7, and the sides of the rowlock are also provided with flanges l0, which inclose the part '7 adjacent thereto, and the base of the rowlock rests upon the gunwale 6 and is provided with an outwardly-directed flange or plate ll at the bottom thereof, and in practice the rowlock is secured in place bybolts 12, which are passed downwardly through the separate sides of the rowlock and through the gunwale 6, and beneath the gunwale 6 is a plate 13, which is provided at each end with backwardly-directed projections le, through which the bolts l2 pass, and said bolts are provided at their lower ends with nuts l5, by means of which the rowlook is firmly held in position.

My improved rowlock is preferably composed of brass, which is cast in the proper form; but the saine may be made of any desired metal, and the plate 13, which is placed below the gunwale 6is provided with a downwardly-directed iiange or plate 16, which is screwed or bolted to the side 5 of the boat.

The lower ends of the bolts 5 and the nuts .15, together with the backwardly-directed projections le of the plate 13, are countersunk in theside of the boat, and it will be apparent that changes in and :modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. A boat provided with the usual gunwale and wash-strip, and a rowlock which is U- shaped in form and Set into said wash-strip so as to rest upon the gunwale, the sides of the rowlock being provided with flanges which overlap the wash-strip and with bolts which pass downwardly therethrough and through the gunwale, substantially as shown and described.

2. A boat provided with the usual gunwale and wash-strip, and a rowlock which is U- shaped in form and set into said wash-strip so as to rest upon the gunwale, the sides of the rowlock being provided with iianges which overlap the wash-strip and with bolts which pass downwardly therethrough and through the gunwa-le, and a plate which is placed beneath the gunwale and through which said bolts also pass, substantially as shown and described.

3. A rowlock for boats constructed as herein described, said rowlock being U-shaped in form, and the sides thereoi:` being provided with outwardly-directed iianges and with bolts which pass vertically therethrough whereby said rowlock may be secured to the wash-strip and gunwale ofthe boat, substantially as shown and described.
