To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, RILEY R. FISH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Grange, in the county of La Grange, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Plaques, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a plaque, and has for its object to secure a photographic print or picture to a plaque wherein the print or picture shall be hermetically sealed from the action of the atmosphere.

The invention therefore consists in forming the plaque with a depression having inclined sides and securing therein by cement a glass pane which carries upon its reverse side the print or picture, the print or picture being doubly sealed by a marginal application of enamel devoidof oil and by the cement which secures the glass in the recess of the plaque.

The invention further consists in the parts as hereinafter shown, described; and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a plaque constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken at a point indicated by the line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the plaque.

A designates the plaque, which is formed with a depression B within its upper surface, the side wall bof the depression being inclined outwardly toward the top of the plaque. Extending circumferentially from the body of the plaque is the rim 0, preferably formed of filigree-work, in which may be threaded a ribbon c, tied with a suitable bow 0', whereby the rim presents an ornamental appearance. Depending from the body of the plaque is an annular ridge a, which forms a base for the Seated in the depression B is a glass or other transparent pane D, having secured upon its lower side a photographic print d, preferably through the medium of an interposed layer of gelatin, the print being of a diameter less than the diameter of the glass pane, and securedto the pane in the space thus formed is a layer E of enamel, which serves the purpose of an ornamental mat for the print and also to hermetically seal the upper side of the print from the action of the atmosphere. The enamel used is preferably bicycle-enamel, which must be devoid of oil or greasy matter, as I have found that the enamels containing oils or other greasy substances affect the print by discoloration. The pane thus prepared is inserted in the depression of the plaque, the edge thereof being slightly apart from the inclined Wall of the depression, as shown more fully in Fig. 3, and is secured therein by cement, plaster-of-paris, or other suitable binding material F, which binds upon the upper edge of the pane and also beneath the same upon the enamel,whereby the edge of the pane is entirely enveloped thereby, thus preventing the atmosphere and other extraneous matter entering the space G between the pane and the plaque. In order to seal the cement or binding to the plaque, if desired, I may form an annular recess 11 in the Wall of the depression, into which the ocment is forced, as shown in Fig. 3.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a plaque in which a photographic print or picture may be exhibited, in which the print or picture is sealed from the action of the atmosphere, and in which the sealing medium (the enamel) will not affect the print or picture, being devoid of oil or greasy ingredients.

While I have shown and described the plaque, depression therein, and glass pane as round or circular in form, I wish it understood that the plaque, depression, and pane may be made of any contour without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. A plaque having a depression in side thereof, a transparent pane secured in the depression, a print secured thereto through the medium of an interposed adhesive film of gelatin, the print being of smaller area than the area of the transparent pane, a layer of enamel secured around the pane and slightly overlapping the same, the outer edge of the enamel being inclined inwardly from the edge of the pane, and a marginal layer of binding material, such as cement, embracing the pane and the enamel, above and below the same respectively, substantially as described.

2. A plaque having a depression in the upper side thereof, the side walls of the depression being inclined, a transparent pane having a photographic print or picture secured thereon arranged in the depression and secured therein by a marginal application of binding material such as cement, plaster-ofparis, &e., embracing the pane above and below the edge of the same, substantially as described.

3. A plaque having a depression in the upper side thereof, a transparent pane having a photographic print or picture secured thereon and sealed by a marginal layer of enamel, an annular groove in the side wall of the depression in the plaque, the pane being secured in the depression by a binding material such as cement or plaster-of-paris embracing the pane above and below the edges of the same and extending into the annular groove in the side Wall of the depression, substantially as described.
