MEANS FOR RAISING FLOATING OBJECTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,606, dated January 18, 1898.

Be it known that I, LEVI DODGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Nashville,in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Raising Floating Objects; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is atop plan view of my invention as applied, and Fig. 2 is an end View of the same.

This invention is designed to provide means of novel character for raising floating objects--such as logs, timber, barrels, &c. from the water onto docks, wharves, piers, barges, &c.; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a structure upon which the floating objects are to be raised and which, as above indicated, may be a pier, wharf, dock, barge, (he. and which is separated from another structure A of like character by a waterway or floatway 0. Both A and A may, however, be ditferentparts or portions of one and the same structure, such as the wharf indicated in Fig. 1, which is divided to form the fioatway 0 between the same. The part A in Fig. 1 may also be understood to represent an ordinary wharf or pier and the part A a boat or barge anchored alongside thereof with the floatway 0 between, or said parts may be two adjacent boats, barges, piers, &c.

D designates a suitable winding device or Windlass, whose shaft D is journaled in a suitable frame E, supported on the structure A. F designates idle or hearing rollers which are journaled at the upper portion of said frame, and G indicates ropes or chains or the like, one end of each of which is made fast to the Windlass or winding device and passes from thence up to and over one of the bearing-rollers F and thence down and across the floatway to the opposite structure, to which it is made fast, as indicated at h.

K indicates an object, such as a stick of timber, which is to be raised onto the struc ture A.

The operation is as follows: The ropes or chains G are unwound from the Windlass to form the loops L, which extend down into the floatway O and below the surface of the water. The object K which is to be raised is then floated into said loops, after which the chains or cables are wound up, thereby lifting the said object up out of the water and onto the structure A, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2.

Any suitable number of ropes or chains may be employed, according to the length of the objects to be raised or as may otherwise be necessary.

I do not desire to limit myself to any particular winding mechanism, as any suitable mechanism of the kind operated either by power or by hand may be employed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The herein-described means for raising floating objects, comprising a floatway one end of which communicates with open water, a Windlass mounted upon one side or branch of the said floatway, and ropes connected thereto and passing up and over elevated bearing-pulleys above the said Windlass, thence across the floatway and over the opposite side or branch thereof to which they are secured at the ends, whereby an object floated into the intermediate portions of said ropes looped into said fioatway, may be raised onto and rolled back upon that side of the floatway to which said ropes are secured, substantially as specified.

2. Means for raising floating objects, such means comprising a structureorstructures constructed or arranged to form a floatway into which the object to be raised can be r floated, aWindla-ss orthelike atone side of the said fioatway, bearing-rollers above the Windlass, and ropes, chains, or the like fastened at one end portion to the said Windlass and passing from thence up and over said bearing-rollers, thence down and into said float- Way to form loops into which said object can be floated, and thence up and secured at the opposite side of the fioatway, substantially as specified.
